Default Pill blocks effect of alcohol

A new pill can block the effects of alcohol.

http://lifestyle.ca.msn.com/health-f...cts-of-alcohol

Many questions popped into my head reading the headline and most of them get repeated in the article. Questions like:

Why?

In all seriousness, even before I got to the bottom of the article it dawned on me that this would probably be an important drug in helping combat addiction. But still that left more questions. Like:

Is it safe?

Couldn't it cause even worse drinking (and substance) problems for people who abuse it or use it as a party game?

Perhaps it will be strictly controlled when it comes out.

How would it combat addiction? If you wanted to get drunk, wouldn't you just not take the pill?

But then you wouldn't be drunk...

No pleasure response by the brain, suddenly you lose the connection in trying to drink your problems away. (Or for whatever reason a person may over drink)

EDIT: OOps sorry, misread that, but the second sentence still stands.

You would take it if you were trying to combat your addiction but didn't trust yourself. Or a doctor would prescribe it. Once you lose that high that you get from drinking, you can lose the addiction too.

If it's helping metabolize the alcohol somehow you'd be drinking yourself to death the same way you could drink yourself to death with water. Alcohol is fine until you can't metabolize it any more, then it starts to poison you.

Yeah I kinda thought that, so it should be safe, IE most of the alcohol will metabolize before the drug wears off, but what if the drug wears off first and you have all this poison still unprocessed or unpassed in your body? Does a single pill have a limit of how much it can metabolize? Obviously it would have a limit of at least how long it could do that.

I obviously don't know enough about it, but it seems like it could be dangerous if not properly used.

Haha, I like how posters are explaining how you'd likely drink yourself to death, followed by Tourquedog posting "I like this idea".

I know he was likely just responding to the thread in general, but the sequence of posts made me laugh.

It depends on how long they make the effects last. If they can make it a slow release, similar to some types of birth control, then someone who wants to quit could take it and then when they give in to their addiction, they won't get the effects.

Addiction isn't about wanting to get drunk or high. It's about not being able to control it.

That pill makes as much sense as non-alcoholic beer.

I don't want to block the effects of alcohol. I want to block the effects of hangovers.

Wonder if it could be used to help you sober up really quickly. If so, would be amazing. You could go out and get hammered on a Tuesday, take a pill at 11:00 PM and be nice and chipper for work the next morning. You'd be able to drive home to boot. Not to mention phenomenoms like the spins would become a thing of the past.

Bahaha. I knew someone would catch that.

The thing that appeals to me about this is casual drinking. Wing nights, watching hockey games at the pub with friends and so on.

I'm not a big drinker. Hell, I'm barely a casual drinker. I don't drink to get drunk. But sometimes I like to have a couple brews when I'm out with my friends for wings or whatever. Pop the pill, drink whatever I was going to, and you can drive home safely because - medically - you're not intoxicated.

At the point whee your intoxicated though, the alcohol is already in your blood stream and then wouldn't it be too late? I mean, wouldn't the majority of the metabolization happen in your stomach and small intestine?

I don't know here, but I'm not sure the pill would work in that fashion.

Take a Gravol and Tylenol with a big glass of water before bed and wake up fresh!

Bad advice. Don't take tylenol with alcohol. Take 10!

Well I said take the pill before you consume alcohol. No, the pill won't do jack if you're already drunk.
