Official CP Election Day Thread - Do Not Post Results Until 8pm Mountain Time.
Thought Id get it started nice and early. Please try and keep all the Election Day (including incoming results) here.
It will be interesting at the end of the day to compare the seats results with this prediction.

Well, good luck (if thats the right way to put it) to all folks who care about this stuff. I hope your party/member gets elected and you will be satisfied with the results.
I hope, whatever happens, that the members elected realize that the country is divided beyond belief and work to make that better.

Just stumbled across this while reading the Herald online this morning and found it rather remarkable.
Quote:
For what it's worth from a columnist who fearlessly predicted a Conservative win in 2004, the Tories will win 140 seats, almost double the Liberal seat count amid a surprising surge for New Democrats who will benefit the most from an anything-but-Harper vote.
There's a chance it could be much, much bigger. Former Conservative prime minister Brian Mulroney, despite his many faults, can take the pulse of Quebec accurately. He's telling the campaign he expects a minimum of seven Quebec seats to go Tory tonight and could see 20 going their way if the federalist vote dominos away from the Liberals. If so, welcome to a majority Harper government.
|
7-20 seats in Quebec? I doubt it....but...
Man would that send a message to both the Libs and Duceppe.

As I understand it, it's illegal to discuss election results online or on any medium until the polls close in BC at 8pm Calgary time.
Yeah, I know-how enforceable is it, people have satellite dishes to find out eastern results, you could phone someone...but the maximum fine is apparently $25K and some jail time, so it's not worth risking it.

Thats ancient history...though it used to be that way up until 1995 i believe.

According to Section 329 of the Canada Elections Act: No person shall transmit the result or purported result of the vote in an electoral district to the public in another electoral district before the close of all of the polling stations in that other electoral district.
Broadcasting was allowed before, but the BC Court of Appeals overturned that decision in 2004 so it can't be like the last time.

Also, here's a quick look at the implication of blogging today:

From a TV perspective, I understand that satellite providers will be doing blackouts.

Yes i just searched blogs and found this...
From Section 329 of the Canada Elections Act: No person shall transmit the result or purported result of the vote in an electoral district to the public in another electoral district before the close of all of the polling stations in that other electoral district.
(Polls close at 10 p.m. ET). This means you, bloggers. The backstory, from the CBC, and a discussion. From Antonia Zerbisias: So let’s say that, on Monday night, the Conservatives start sweeping through the Maritime provinces or Newfoundland. Will the Blogging Tories be able to contain their glee and stick to the law before the polls close in B.C.? Will bigfoot bloggers such Andrew Coyne or web fora such as Free Dominion stifle the commentariat who might be posting results with no regard for the rules?
Just asking.
I can tell you this: I will be here monitoring the TV coverage Monday night, and blogging about it. I hope you will join me, and share your views. But I can’t approve any comments that reference any results in any riding until 10 p.m. ET.

It is a strange law, and tough to enforce, I'd guess. Best to avoid the internet altogether until 8pm MST just to be on the safe side.

read a couple of stories today in the papers that have the Liberals targetting 115 ridings they believe they have a chance of winning. Wow how the mighty have fallen in a couple of years. 115 is well short of a majority and you know they are not going to win all of those ridings. The latest globe pool calls for the liberals winning about 75, conservatives 140, NDP 35, Bloc 55ish. I'd say that 75 makes sense if the strategists are only thinking they have a hope in 115 of ridings.

There won't be much influence from the east. The polls in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta all close at the same time. Here is the rundown:
Eastern time- 9:30 pm
CENTRAL TIME 8:30 pm
Mountain time 7:30 Pm
Newfoundland 8:30
Atlantic 8:30
Pacific 7:00
The way it works out, from east of Quebec you will get early results. After that you may see results from Saskatchewan and Alberta appearing first. Smaller population, less votes to count. I did have a link for this but I lost it. Did remember the times though.

A Warning to people in McKenzie Towne
Just to let anybody who is voting in McKenzie Towne know; the address is wrong on the voter card. It shows "20 Prestwick Road" however it is at "20 Prestiwick Drive."
My boss was good enough to let me come into work late so I could vote (technically I have 3 hours this evening, but I have school tonight); and I was trying to get in and out as quick as possible.
The worst thing was I mentioned it to them, and somebody said something along the lines of "all you had to do was go to the big church."
Right, like I'm supposed to know where a specific church is located 2 communities away from me.

320 seats? Are the Liberals going to create 12 mythical ridings to help their chances?

Also, it's illegal for Moore to be posting that:
http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/E-2.01/15015.html#section-331
I sent him a cordial note pointing out the law and also saying, "Stay out of our election, and we'll stay out of yours."
