Even if it didn't have a native ability to subscribe to podcasts, there will definitely be podcast apps available in their marketplace. Pocket Casts, for example, is a cross-platform podcasting app for iPhone/Android, and I know its been featured in the Amazon app store before.

I'm not sure that every Android device can be rooted but most can, and you can do pretty much whatever you want with it after that.

The final word on most Android development can be found at http://www.xda-developers.com/. They've already got a Kindle Fire subforum.

Not to go all moral high ground on you (which means that's exactly what I'm going to do) but with apps generally costing a max of $5, do you really need a "discount"?

I took my iPad back...

I exchanged the 16 gig for the 32 gig model, that shot the price up to 620+ tax. Then I went for the in store warranty based on a horror story my friend had with his iPad trying to get it fixed and how much it ended up costing him. That added 70. Then a case since it will spend most of its time in my back pack, thrown in so free. Then a skin for the front/back because scratches piss me off, so 50.

I was in for right around 800 total for this thing. So I took it home, fired it up. Great interface, very user friendly, apps are very neat. But for 800 bucks I could not justify keeping it, especially when the primary use it would get is as an E Reader for PDF files.

So it was returned for a full refund minus the skin.. lesson learnt.

Anyone have any idea how good this Kindle Fire is at reading PDF's?

Then that is a deal breaker for me... I am guessing you cant install third party programs either?

We use a program called Mendeley at school for organizing and sharing PDF's.. without that it is useless. Damn you Amazon!

The PDF insight was from a statement made by the Amazon CEO earlier in this thread. I only remembered it because that's my primary use for such a device as well. Not sure about 3rd party apps, but I think it has full access to the Amazon app store, which probably contains many 3rd party apps - but possibly not the one you are needing.

Might want to look at the Asus Transformer. I have heard good things about it.

Android tablet for $399 (16 GB) or $469 (32 GB).

It is 10.1 inches and has 9.5 hours battery life, 1280 x 800 resolution, 1 GHz dual core Tegra 2 processor, 1 GB RAM, and dual cameras (5 mp and 1.3 mp).

It also has Honeycomb (Android 3.2).

AND it also has the ability to add an optional keyboard to turn your tablet into a laptop if you so desire.

That is what I am aiming to get for Christmas!

I think it should be able to read non-Amazon PDFs so long as they aren't protected by DRM, but I believe you'd need to move them onto the Amazon Cloud to access them. I think the bigger concern would be the 7" screen; for PDFs a bigger screen is generally better since they can't be re-flowed like EPub or Amazon e-books can.

Of course we also don't know when the Fire will actually be available in Canada - my guess would be not until after Christmas.

Although there is talk that we may see the ASUS Transformer 2 sometime soon (before the end of the year) and it will be equipped with the quad-core Tegra 3 and blow pretty much every other tablet out of the water in terms of performance.

EDIT: Actually the Tegra 3 is five-core, not 4. It has 4 cores at up to 1.5 GHz and a 5th core at up to 0.5 Ghz.

EDIT 2: Also will come with Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0).

Yes, now is not the time to buy a Honeycomb tablet, unless you know it will be getting the ICS upgrade.

I am interested in buying a Kindle as an X-mas gift this year. Would the CP brain trust recommend me waiting a month or two or picking one up now?

If I should pick it up now, where are the bargains at?

I wouldn't expect the new Kindles in Canada before Christmas - Amazon prioritize the US market and often don't have enough supply for foreign markets until after Christmas (based on the history with previous models). If you're sure it's a Kindle you want (vs. the other options), and if you're sure you want it before Christmas, you'd probably be limited to the current models unless you know someone with a US mailing address you can get it sent to.

Do your research and think about what is important to you:
- Do you want a touch screen or buttons for turning pages?
- Do you have any use for a keyboard on it?
- Would you rather organize your books on your computer or on your e-reader?
- Is being able to buy books on the go using your e-reader important to you?
- Is a wireless connection to your computer or the internet important for you?
- Do you want one-stop shopping or do you prefer to shop around?
- Do you prefer to buy Canadian or do you not care?
