That was one of the reasons my fiancée's ring is a sapphire. I couldn't get anything close to a good deal on an oval cut 2.37ct center stone if it was a diamond.

So what your saying is that Red should cut out the middle man and offer to sell the ring directly to the fiance.

No, the middle man wont be getting cut out... or the ring. ANd the only blow job the ring dealer will get is a big blow off. He's probably fat, nasty and smells like onions anyway.
The long term committment is far more important then the size of the diamond.
I have checked everything out with buying online and bringing a ring in from the states. The duty is free if it's North American made, which most are, a bonus. So I can get a nice .4 carat center diamond cut heart on white gold for $500 with SI2 clarity and H color and pay only 5% tax. So this sounds really good to me.

So really what did you need to start the thread for if you didn't need any advice?

I looked at Bluenile alot when buying... but ended up going with Whiteflash.com
Got a much better deal for what turned out to be a gorgeous ring. I found Whiteflash has a much larger selection as far as settings go too.
But I spent a hair over $500...

I've just been working on it since posting. I have talked to the online company, Fedex and Canadian customs.

So much time and focus goes into what size the ring cost, and how many carats, and how much you spend, etc. Maybe instead people should focus on the huge decision they are about to commit to; making a life long promise to someone. How about spending some money on a pre-marriage course or something?
No offense to the OP, just something that really irks me.
P.S. - And don't worry OP, in a few years your wife will just want to spend thousands to upgrade the diamond anyways....
|
Yup; I'm on board with this 100%. When I was buying a ring for my wife, I focused on getting something unusual with really beautiful filigree workmanship, which would really suit her style. It wasn't cheap, but we were both happy to have something that was very distinct and which wasn't supporting the diamond industry. Of course, not every woman is going to appreciate that gesture; many are only interested in the bragging-rights side of owning a diamond ring, not in what it actually means to the two of you. But even if your budget is only $500, I strongly recommend actually finding a way to make the ring emotionally significant, don't just worry about buying the biggest stone you can afford.

Interesting octothorp,
Do you mind me asking what the interesting figurine was? Did you not buy a ring that had a diamond? I was htinking about scribing somehting to the inside of it to personalize it more.

According to Moneysense, the best place to buy your diamonds is Costco. I confirmed this when an otherwise very reasonable jeweler wanted approx. double Costco's price for exactly the same quality/size of stone. OTOH, I don't think Costco has any engagement rings that are under $3,500-4,000.

Just go with what my pops did.
Used the cash on a washer and dryer instead because that was what my parents needed at the time. Happily married for 35 years.

Yea, I just checked cosco out and they only have huge diamonds and no less then 3k.
I think a .4 carat is not a chip anyway.

I think a woman needs to chime in, but I don't think they show off anything under 1 ct, maybe 0.75, so anything under that is all the same. Therefore, if money is an issue, you have several options:
1) tell her you'll buy her a nice ring when you are able to
2) buy her a non-diamond
3) try to get something unique/personal

Just have a talk with her, and explain how much you can afford to spend now, and tell her that you can either get her a "cheap" ring now or something nice in a couple of years. If her response is "Just put it on the VISA", interview other candidates...
