Default Mice/Keyboards

Thinking about getting a new mouse/keyboard. I currently have a Logitech MX510 mouse and I'll keep it if there's nothing out there that really blows me away, had this mouse for 7 years and it's been amazing. Has anyone used the new Logitech G500 or the old MX518? I assume the difference between the 510 and 518 is not much.

As far as keyboards go, I just have the standard HP one that came with my old PC. I want to get something that's silent and comfortable.

Any suggestions?

Personally I use mechanical keyboards and will never go back to a rubber membrane keyboard again (all Logitechs are rubber membrane keyboards as are the majority of consumer keyboards).

Many of the mechanical models are loud but there are some that use soft key switches as well.

Refer to these:

You either have an IBM Bucking Spring, ALPS switch, or Cherry Blues keyboard. I guess you bought a Razer Blackwidow mechanical gaming keyboard recently with Cherry Blue switches?

I use Razer Blackwidow keyboard and Razer Spectre mouse at home.
Like Hack&Lube said, once you get used to your mechanical keyboard, you can never go back to typing on a regular keyboard.

As for being "quiet" Blackwidow uses Cherry Blue switches so they are one of the loudest keyboards.

At work, I bought a Das Professional Silent mechanical keyboard which uses the Cherry Brown switches. It's a lot quieter compared to Cherry Blue switches but it's still louder than regular keyboards. Typing on it doesn't feel as good as typing on a Cherry Blue but it's a lot better than a regular keyboard for sure.

I actually find the Blackwidow to be not loud enough. I want a keyboard that clicks and clacks satisfyingly like the computer I used at the Nose Hill Library in the early 90s

What PC are you using? Right now I'm using a laptop with a Logitech MX5500 Revolution mouse with my MBP. I've had it for almost a year now and it's holding up okay. But if I were to recommend a mouse you should look up the Razer Orochi (preferably if you're using a laptop though).

As for a keyboard? The Steelseries keyboards are very efficient and they feel great. I believe most of them mechanical. But I would recommend steel series over razer when it comes to keyboards.

I've been using the Logitech G700 for around 10 months now, and have been super happy with it. I use it wired about 98% of the time, but with the quick connect cable it's your preference if you want it wired or not. It's nice and comfortable, and if you do any gaming it's nice to have the extra buttons to remap keys to.

On for $99 at newegg: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16826104377

Only one Steelseries keyboard is mechanical and it uses very different switches than the Razer which uses Cherry MX Blues. The Steelseries G6v2 uses Cherry MX Black keyswitches. All the other Steelseries keyboards use a rubber membrane sheet under the plastic keys instead of individual switches.

The issue is not really between quality between brands but when picking a mechanical keyboard, it's the key switches which matter. The switches for both are made by Cherry but blacks are a different design from blues.

Cherry MX Black (as in Steelseries G6)

Cherry MX Blue (as in Razer)

G15 is a great keyboard. I also use the newer G500 mouse and it feels very comfortable to use. Definitely recommend both.

I second the G15 keyboard. Had it for a year and a half and its the best keyboard I've ever owned. I picked up a Logitech G9X mouse last year and its a very nice mouse. At first I thought the shape of it would be weird but it comes with a couple different hand grips and weights so you can customize it to your preference.
