Default New radio station for Calgary

CRTC is soon deciding on granting a licence for at least one new radio station in Calgary. Some of the candidates:

www.929extremefm.com

www.newcalgaryradio.com

Anything would be better than the mind-numbing banality of CJ 92, Lite 96, Country 107 and the Breeze. I get nervous though when stations brand themselves as "extreme" or "alternative" then play crap like Nickelback, Staind and Our Lady Peace.

My vote would go to 929extreme. The other one (Cafe FM) is "adult alternative".

We already have rock/alternative stations...

What Calgary really needs is a good R&B/Blues station.

But how many people in calgary would be into listening to that type of station?
While I do agree that Calgary radio sucks in comparison to places like Van and TO it doesn't have the cross-boarder competition to get any better. Also, population wise, I am not sure if calgary can support the same number of radio stations as the other places. Maybe in 10 years, but not right now.

92.9 extreme would be a welcomed addition. Although i have satelliete RAdio, the demographics have shifted and the people with the money are the ones listeing to radiohead, old rage songs, kaiser chiefs, franz ferdinand, the heavy metal. All the kids who grew up with Mix 1060, Kik fm, and what ever else 107 was during the eraly nintes are the ones in the suits down town. An alternative radio station would be a huge success right now.

CJAY 92, JACK, Q 107 and Vibe (haha they wish) 98.5 all play some form of rock/alternative/pop when can we get a hip hop station back? I love my rock and all (I listen to the Q and thats it) but there is no representation for hip hop or rap, it would also be nice if the station could be uncensored as well I have heard alot of swearing on the University station that is broadcasted all over the city so it's not like it's impossible.

PS. CRTC sucks

Doesn't Edmonton have an enormous amount of radio stations and selection? What happened here? There is such little selection here.

The only stations that play true alternative music in Calgary are CJSW, CKUA and CBC2, and that depends on what the program is from hour to hour.

Winnipeg and Edmonton both have R&B/Hip Hop stations. Winnipeg also has a station called FREQ 107 that plays true alternative rock with few commercials and some mainstream mixed in.

Their playlist for today:

Not bad, but not alternative enough for me. Stone Temple Pilots? Our Lady Peace? Offspring? Wide Mouth Mason? Sounds mainstream to me.

Isn't Breeze now rebranded to California FM?

And I like the Freq107 playlist (STP & Foos are big favs of mine) but it would be nice to have an alternative station along the lines of what CFNY used to be back in Etobicoke. I was introduced to that when I went to McMaster, and hated it at first but I really grew to like it after a while.

It seems that some where along the line Alternative lost its meaning and became a format (Oh well, it was a stupid label anyway). It seems the North American radio stations that label themselves as Alternative/Modern rock are just crappy stations that play all the sound-a-like bands in a short playlist.

When I lived in Calgary, I always hoped for a good Altrock/modern rock station, but now it seems that it has become such a tired, safe format, they'll finally jump on board.

I really enjoy Sirius's left of center, and haven't listened to commercial radio since I got it.

The Calgary Herald Story:

http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...9-a8134598a4e1

Ten wannabe Calgary-based radio stations are vying for a slot on the Calgary radio dial. And the final push is on to drum up public and media support those aspiring stations hope will help win over the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the federal agency that will eventually grant (at least) one lucky station a licence.
The race is getting down to the wire.

Jan. 24 is the deadline for "interventions," wherein the public can send letters to the CRTC, arguing for, or against the various stations and their value in the marketplace.

I wouldn't mind the 92.9 Extreme station either.

Anything where I don't have to listen to trash "classics" where they play "icons" like Kim Mitchell for CanCon. Already got too many stations which play "classics" time for some new music stations.

According to whom? I am a huge follower of the radio industry, especially the North American Market. Yes, I agree, if one wants to be naive and think that, go ahead. The problem with radio is that too many people rely on the BBM as a source of listeners.

The BBM is horrible way of depicting the listener habits of the people in the city. Hip hop/Rnb stations are catered towards the younger generation, who as much as one may not believe have some disposable income which can be used on the companies whom advertise on the particular station. How many younger people are willing to fill out BBM sheets for their listening habits, very limited.

However those whom are older will most likely not mind filling out mundane sheets to let the BBM know what they listen to. Thus, the whole Country 105, Jack, etc, being the most listened to station should be taken with a grain of salt.

Music sales on a whole have been in general decline for the last 5 years. All genres have suffered and seen the numbers drop. The only genre of music that has overall growth in the last number of years, is the hip/hop rnb kind. This despite the fact there is literally no airplay on the radio.

There is viability for this type of station in most metro areas in Canada. Unfortunately, most advertisers have the old school mentality that the BBM is the sole indication of listeners, which they are greatly mistaken. Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary and most recently, Kitchener/Waterloo had this at one time, but due to pressures from the parent company wanting immediate results, had to adjust the playlist accordingly.

This does not mean there is no audience. Most younger people do not listen to country, rock or oldies. They listen to the same music that is played in the clubs. Hence, it is viable. The key is to bring the right companies into the fold for ad revenue.

In essence, Calgary radio is horrible. Thank god for ipods and satellite radio.
