It's also ridiculously expensive to live around there as well. I feel the best places to live are in the South side of the city. Even if Riverbend is too much of a commute, or too pricey, I'd try and find something south of the river. You can come and enjoy the pathetic Edmonton construction scheduling!
The most crime ridden neighborhoods are up north (Abbotsfield), and even downtown can be quite dangerous at night. Although I have lived in Edmonton/Calgary/Fort Mac for all of my life and I have never been involved in any sort of criminal matter. For the most part just don't go out at the wrong time, or hang out with the wrong people and you'll be fine.
Oh and WEM sucks. I can't really think of many people that even bother going to that mail unless they are runaway teens, wayward youths, tourists, or criminals. Heck there is just as many murders/crime outside WEM then many other dangerous areas in the city. Southgate Mall is the best mall in the city by far; so many hot rich chicks, it will make your head spin.
