Default Stolen vehicles cause mayhem in Calgary, CPS shoot and kill one

Bizarre story last night out of Whitehorn and all over the NE/NW...

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/st...221/story.html

Quote:
At a news conference Thursday morning, Calgary police described a chain of events leading up to the shooting:

Police units were following two stolen trucks through Calgary and used spike belts in an attempt to stop both vehicles.

After the belt disabled one of the trucks, occupants climbed into the second truck and fled.

The second truck was followed to Whitehorn, where a man and woman got out. The man ran into a random backyard, confronted an officer with a screwdriver, and was fired upon, police said. The woman was later arrested nearby.

Police at the news conference wouldn't disclose further details of the shooting itself, pending the outcome of the ASIRT investigation.

The officer who fired the shot is a 10-year veteran of the police force and a member of the police tactical unit.

Meanwhile, the driver of the pickup, who never left the stolen vehicle, sped away from the Whitehorn scene and ended up driving on the wrong side of 16th Avenue, police said.

Pursuing police vehicles boxed in the suspect truck at the intersection of 16th Avenue and University Drive N.W., but the driver refused to step out of the vehicle.

After the canine police unit failed to flush the driver from the pickup, officers hit the suspect with a rubber bullet. He was arrested at the scene and is in custody facing charges, as is the woman taken into custody at the earlier location.
There's a video in the Herald link which is quite interesting with comments from Chief Hanson...unfortunately, I can't embed it.

Weird story. Too bad about hearing about a death but sounds like the police did what they had to do. They need to protect themselves and the citizens.

He was likely pretty close to the officer to be shot. Also, when you think about it, if someone lunges and thrusts hard with a screwdriver, it can be just as deadly as a knife.

He was screwed as soon as he decided to steal a vehicle.

....oh and just to cover everything so we can hopefully avoid MikeyTheRedneck's drivel

cops are pigs
could have avoided shooting
insert random police video from But**** arkansas
talk about some bizarre conspiracy
condescendingly tell everyone that they have blind faith in police, while linking to random webste that he has blind faith in
one more "cops are pigs" comment

....and that should be everything.

Whatever you bring to the fight against a cop, they try to go one step above. You want to punch? They will taze. You want to stab? They will shoot.

I hope the police officer was not hurt, I could care less about the criminal.

I, on the other hand, could not care less about the criminal.

Kind of uncalled for no? You may not agree with all of Mikey's opinions but he also raises some good points as well.

Usually I'm one of the first to comment on police force, but I think it was justified here.

This was a true criminal, not just a protester, or a streaker for starts. Secondly, he was trying to escape, and sounds like he took the cops on a dangerous chase if a spike belt was used. Lastly, he pulled a weapon on the officer. Doesn't matter it wasn't a gun.

Clearly the cop had two options

1. Run
2. Shoot

His name has not been released, but I've heard from a close contact that on the street he was known as Phillip.

Come on, you left out

3. Go all Steven Segal on the guy, break both of his arms and one of his legs.

It happens in the movies all the time! Cops don't need guns!
