Suggest a 5 day road trip

We're shipping my daughter off to relatives for a couple weeks...sending dogs to the kennel, and the wife and I are gettin' outta Dodge for a few days. We both love road trippin' so I'm open to any ideas. I have roughly 5 days, could stretch it out to 6 or 7, but prefer to keep it to 5 max. I'd like to just get in the car and drive, but not sure where this time. Would prefer stateside with it being cheaper on most things and all. We've done Spokane and Seattle a few times, as well as most of BC and AB, so kind of thinking something a little different. Any good itinerary ideas out there?

Can you fly somewhere and drive from there? One of my favourite things to do.

Number one from San Fran, via Monterrey and Carmel, to Santa Monica . . . . . we took three days on a two-lane to finish what might be a four hour freeway drive. Best done in the shoulder seasons though to keep the traffic down.

Rode my bicycle from Banff down to Yahk, then Sandpoint and Cour' d'Alene, then through Kellogg and over to Helena, Montana bfore going to Great Falls and back up through Sweetgrass and Lethbridge then into central Alberta, near Red Deer. About 1,200 miles (or km, can't remember), I think. On $300 through about three weeks of cycling back in the day, taking my time. Drove in a few years ago for amusement. Side trip would be Going To the Sun road and Waterton.

Victoria on Vancouver Island up north and, I think its called Golden Hind park as a diversion, then Port Hardy to Prince Rupert on the ferry. The ferry I took is now on the bottom of the ocean and I had a cheap, lower berth. Scary thinking about that. Prince Rupert over to Jasper. Very long drive, then down to Lake Louise and home.

Drive to Yellowknife and back. Fat lot of nothing. Have a coffee in Pouce Coupe.

One of my Facebook friends today was talking about the old Route 66 Route between Oklahoma City and Tulsa she took this weekend . . . . diner pit stops sounded wonderful. She bought some "####### Root Beer" at Pop's Diner. Love to do that!!

Yeah could fly out, but prefer just to drive off from here. I would love to do San Fran, or even LA, but would like more time while there, and that just isn't in the cards this time around.

Oregon coast has me somewhat intrigued....a little far but definitely doable. For those that have done it, what do you suggest as a starting point, the southern tip right along on up to the northern tip? Not sure if I'd have quite enough time for the whole coast, maybe start half way down through the state and work our way up? Any can't miss spots along there?

A friend suggested Salt Lake City. Kind of seems a little boring, but I suppose my wife would enjoy lots of good old US shopping if nothing else there. Pretty doable distance in our timeframe as well. Havn't been. Anyone?

Drive to the Redwood forest and then take the I5 back up the coast. Maybe return to Canada via Vancouver Island for the hell of it.

5 days is practically no time to enjoy any sort of extended roadtrip. So I say take a drive out to Seattle.

Hence the post for suggestions for a 5 dayer, not an extended road trip.

My wife and I have driven to Phoenix twice now and although you would probably need longer than 5 days for that trip, we do usually stop in Salt Lake City on the way down.

We usually go out to one of the several breweries in the area for dinner which is always a great time. It may be worth your while to see if there is anything to do in SLC as from what I could tell it was actually a nice city to be in.

Yeah, for some reason that one has me interested as well, if for no other reason I haven't been there. The friend who suggested it said it can be done in ten hours from the border, does that sound about right?

I think Yellowstone's a good idea. Never been myself though.

South Dakota - Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Reptile Gardens, etc. Possibly a side trip to Medora, ND.

You could hit Little Bighorn Battlefield/Devil's Tower, WY on the way down...

Yellowstone is nice... if you want to push through you can reach the north edge of the park in a one day drive, and then spend three days exploring the park, and the Grand Tetons, just south of the park.

Sorry, I was just saying that in response to some of the Pacific Coast/SLC suggestions. I was just suggesting a single-stop trip.

Ahhh...I get it.

Yeah you're right though. It's pretty tough to enjoy most of the suggestions on 5 days. You gotta push pretty hard to get anywhere. Even Seattle is a pretty long day. Then if you break it up into two day drives, only leaves you one day there. Sighhhh....might be another Spokane express.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but has anyone been to yellowstone national park? Is it worth the road trip? I am also seeking an adventure this long weekend. Somewhere driving distance.. any help is appreciated!
