Speaker of the Senate has indeed asked Senators to sit tomorrow at 11 (Eastern).

The senate did something? Quick! Everybody pay them a ridiculous amount of money and make sure they have very cushy pensions.

So? Mcdonalds has the cheapest burgers. There's still Wendy's and burger king.

Does Canada Post offer an inferior product in parcel delivery?
USPS blows UPS out of the water on price and speed of delivery, until you get up to about 70#. I'd be surprised if Canada Post didn't make UPS look bad.

UPS in terms of price yes. Especially for duty/import taxes. Fedex I've found is a lot more competitive though. Speed however, no. Unless you're going from major centre to major centre, CP is pretty brutal, IMO. Within Canada, I'd say Fedex is close to the same price, and faster than Canada Post.

God no; CP is at least half the rate for most small parcels. Xpresspost prices seem to be in the range of FexEx ground, but for anything going by regular/expedited parcel, CP is way cheaper.

I am waiting for CP to resume service so I can mail a parcel to another province that weighs 25 pounds, and is a good sized box. CP is half the cost of any other courier service.

Don't hold your breath for mail on Monday. Looks like the Senate wants to drag this out as well.

For sending parcels, if you're willing to go station to station, Greyhound KILLS any other parcel service, especially with large/heavy items. I spent $70 sending 4 wheels/tires to Saskatoon, it would have been hundreds with any other service.

Yeah, I shipped with Greyhound before, too, and they are pretty cheap, but delivering to the door is a priority for me with this package/s I'm shipping. D'oh!

I'd rather not have to pay $30+ in brokerage...

I know. I get it. CP is cheaper. It doesn't mean that the government needs to intervene. AFAIC, the union and the management can choke each other to death. Pissy labour disputes like this one GMG.

You can have packages delivered to your door with Greyhound. I've done it before and it was always an easy and smooth process. I think it's a 7 dollar surcharge for that option.

I am inclined to agree, except that the government should've forced an end to the lockout. The strike was causing minimal disruptions, so just let them do their thing and try to get a deal....I don't care. CP locking out the workers is what stopped the mail though, and that's where it becomes a PITA.

I can't see the Harper government taking away CP's bargaining tactic.
The rotating strikes led to $100 mil in lost revenue. While it may be a minimal disruption to it's customers, that's huge dollar values to the company. Lock employees out, now they get strike pay vs 60% of a paycheque. That's a quicker way to get back to talks and push CP's agenda then letting the employees play their little 'we want to strike but we're not willing to not get paid' games.
If the government steps in and says the rotating strikes are okay, but a lockout is not, then CP has no hand left to play. The union can probably go for a long time on a 60% paycheque while CP loses profits and customers get frustrated. The Conservatives aren't exactly pro-union, and I can't see them ending only the lockout portion.

Royal assent of C-6 is now rumoured to take place at around 7:00 PM (eastern) this evening...
I will believe it when I see it.

It has just come to the attention of one Senator that NOBODY, not Canada Post, not the CUPW, not even the government who wrote the bill has sought legal scrutiny of the bill re: constitutional issues...
