Dear God why?
I would have thought the old bank notes were near impossible to counterfeit well. What with the hologram strip, the tiny symbols, the braille, the way the certain pictures match up from both sides when you hold them to the light (lines and squiggles become 100 on the 100 note, 50 on the 50, etc)
People probably just don't pay enough attention. If they didn't with the old bills, it's unlikely they will with the new bills.
Oh well, as long as they last longer and are therefore cheaper, it's ok with me.
Though I wonder what it cost to update the machinery and process in the mint?

The Royal Canadian Mint does not make our Bill notes. They only make our coins. Canadian Bank Note is the current supplier of Canadian Bank Notes.

Ahh, gotcha. Is this a minor detail or does it really change things? IE, are they a private company and do they pay for the changes? I would imagine even if they were private, the government would have to pay them to facilitate the changes somehow.
Basically what I'm trying to figure out is does this really save us any money or taxes? Sure they last longer, but they're must be some sort of up front costs over and above just the regular costs of printing new money.
It wasn't long ago we started putting the hologram stripes on all the bills. When it first came out, it was only for the 100's and 50's. I believe some of the other security measures were added in afterwards too.
Seems our money is changing often, and we're always told it's so we can save. I'd be interested in knowing how much we really have saved.

From reading the article, it seems to indicate that the Canadian Mint would buy the polymer material from the Australian company and design/print the bills in Canada.

So if it's polymer, does that mean they don't wrinkle since it's plastic? I think they're pretty cool looking too. And if they last as long as coins do, then I think it's worth it in the long run.
