Finally - it's sick how this guy has cared for his animals. Now my only worry is what happens to the animals?

Jiri have you ever been there? If you had been and you still feel this way, thats your opinion, but if you haven't it's sad you've bought into the smear campaign against the GuZoo.

I grew up going to the GuZoo and know the amount of care the family had for each and everyone of those animals. Lynn has been villainized by the media, which I find both sad and disgusting. If people would have spent half as much time helping the GuZoo by donation of time, money or supplies, there would be nothing to complain about!

I have been there, albeit about 3 years or so ago. It was disgustingly filthy.

Be that as it may, its obvious that the amount of care the family had simply wasn't enough. Its tough to argue with the existing conditions.

I agree with AC. I don't buy that the family was heartless and only out to profit off the animals, I believe they truly cared. The conditions and environment however show (imo) that they didn't have the resources to care for the animals properly.

I am happy to hear this. While I am sure that the family did care and did try to keep their operation together, from other volunteering I've done I realize what kind of work goes into this sort of thing. It's pretty obvious that the family wasn't able to provide such work.

If it was only a smear campaign, the government mandated inspections would not have revealed what they did.

There is a major difference between caring for animals, and caring properly for animals.

The crazy cat lady with 50 animals in her home probably loves them, too. Doesn't mean it's the best place for those animals.

I grew up in the area and was taken on a couple field-trips there in high school, and I have to say, my impressions were exactly the opposite of yours. I remember thinking then that many of the animals looked sickly, enclosures were uncleaned. It was really depressing, and turned me off going to zoos for a long time. I haven't been back there in 15 years so I have no idea if conditions improved from the time that I visited it, but it certainly doesn't sound like it. I don't doubt that the owner's heart was in the right place, but even zoos with budgets in the tens of millions and large staffs of trained experts struggle to provide effective care to animals; a few people donating more time or money wasn't going to make a difference in the Guzoo's case.

Personally I think this the classic over-reaction you get from a Province with no strong leadership that thinks everything is a much bigger deal than it actually is.

Has anyone ever tried tiger meat? Just curious.

On another note, do you think the government would consider selling some of the animals to caring citizens? My next door neighbour from China said he would be more than willing to take some of the animals into his home and nurture and care for them.

Gazoo had a long history of offences related to animal care and importation:

http://www.zoocheck.com/Reportpdfs/guzoo%20report.pdf

I think the Gazoo really represents an outdated view of animal welfare. It's shameful that they were allowed to operate for this long. Should have been shut down a decade ago. Small rusty cages in Alberta are not the place for exotic tropical and African animals. Even the Calgary Zoo has improved their enclosure by leaps and bounds by provided multi-million dollar habitats. I really don't see how a small time zoo can possibly provide the right kind of condition for these animals.

Also, it is worth noting that the report was from 2005 and before any recent allegations or "smear campaigns". More of the same from this "zoo" who obviously can't care for the animals.
