They couldnt talk to him about a contract until the WC was over.
Well, he showed up for Rookie camp last year, so how were they supposed to know when they drafted him?

The hell? Are you kidding? Why are people looking for arguments?
I realize this isn't Sidney Crosby. But this looks terrible for the organization. The laughing stock of the league right now. How can we fail to maintain our first round picks, regardless of the reason?
This just feels like the beginning of the end to me. I said 3 days ago that I had a terrible feeling about this. People called me an idiot. I was right.
We both want the same thing, success.... but this hurts in every possible way.

Well at least Erixon did not schedule a primetime tv show to screw us over. That LeBron special on where he would chose to play was the worst thing i have ever seen to do with sports.

Did the Rangers give Erixon a one-way contract?
Really with Bouw, Regehr, Gio and Sarich was Erixon going be a Flames regular?
Was he going to step in and be an obvious upgrade on Brodie / Negrin / Carson and/or Mickelson.
Realistically he was going to need at least half a year in the AHL.
If Backlund is a 1.2M cap hit on his EL... Erixon will be as much

leverage came from the fact its so last minute.
If he didn't want to play here, its hard to come down on management for trading him
arguably however, we ought to have known that a little earlier (like months ago) so that we could have explored other trade options instead of making a deal essentially at gunpoint...
maybe we did, maybe we didn't, but from the scuttlebutt it sure seems like NYR was the only other team we talked to and that just started up today...

Prospects usually dont get signed until two years after being drafted.
Until the past two weeks or so the Flames didnt think they would have a problem signing him and I dont think anyone else did either.

It seems pretty obvious he wanted to play in New York and only New York.

i am confused...couldn't we have signed him right after we drafted him? ie the WC was simply a two week "non contact" period bookended by lots of time to sign Erixon (or as it turns out, realize he didn't want to play here)?

Well, apparently the Rangers fans think that Horak is going to be solid NHL player. Maybe it won't be quite so bad after all.

I just don't understand how management didn't see this coming a year ago? Did they go into negotiations after the World Championships just to be blown away by what Erixon was proposing?

O'Reilly played on the 3/4 lines all season long. Isn't that the exact thing you are complaining about the Flames doing?
And the Flames haven't had a forward prospect with close to the talent of Skinner since Iginla so unfair to expect them to have the same results as what Skinner did.

That would be hard to do, since you turned around and made a deal with that team.

Disappointing on all fronts. There still a bunch a questions:
Did he really want to be Flame? Did his Dad influence him?
When did he tell Flames "not interested"? Was he prepared to re-enter draft or was it a bluff?
In his draft year, Erixon probably said all the things the Flames wanted to hear in his interview at the combine.
Contract options? not much wriggle room to negotiate over:
League min is 525k. Rookie league max is ~900k. Players who sign their first contract at age 18-21 are required to sign three-year Entry Level contracts.

Am I kidding? No
It isn't great as I said but it is far from being a terrible day for the franchise.
The laughing stock of the league are teams like the Oilers, Panthers, BJ's who have consistently missed the play-offs for the past 5 years.
