Honestly, if we don't sign our top prospects we are doomed. We need to trade all our lower picks (ie. 2nd-7th rounders) and package them with our first to move up in all drafts. Now if our team could actually draft semi-decently this probably wouldn't make a lot of sense. But let's call a spade a spade. We have lost a 1st rounder for 2 2nds. I am not happy at all. If he wanted to play here or not is not the issue. The issue is that they had 2 YEARS to sign the kid or make a deal. Having a gun pointed to your head is not the right way to handle a situation like this. For all of you "blaming Sutter", your insane. He hasn't been the GM for months...give me a break.

So angered by this deal.....perhaps more by the circumstance more than anything.

Agree with those who think we should move up in the draft with the extra picks. Drafting a true #1 centre should be top priority now.

Hmmmm.

Grossman was also Jan Erixon's agent (Tim's dad).
Grossman is also Oscar Lindberg's agent (Tim's second cousin).
Lindberg was also Tim's team mate in Skelleftea.

The Rangers just traded for Lindberg on May 8th.

Looks like a giant coupe amongst Grossman and the Erixon clan (Lindberg included) to play for the Rangers.

F 'em all.

Hopefully Horak and whoever we take with 2nd round picks makes this a steal for Calgary when we look back on it years from now.

This situation shouldn't be allowed to exist however, but the CBA permits it. There should be some minimum standard that a team must meet in order to sign a draft pick so the draft pick cannot simply refuse to sign until the last moment because his dad is secretly negotiating with another team. Foul play but a big win for the Rangers.

This kind of situation is not good for the NHL and struggling teams as it defeats the purpose of an ordered draft with higher picks going to weaker teams. Players could always just refuse to sign for arbitrary reasons while outsiders are potentially tampering with the rights to negotiate.

Where would Pittsburg or the Lightning be today if their 1st rounders like Crosby, Malkin, Stampkos, etc. had arbitrarily refused to sign? There should be a minimum standard (salary, conditions, etc.) that teams only have to reach and a player has no choice but sign, but the CBA doesn't work that way.

Best of a bad situation and it is a bad situation. Two years in a row with no 1st round pick. Ugh.

The Flames didnt realize there was going to be a contract issue until at the earliest a couple weeks ago.

We dont even know when Feaster started talking to teams about a trade..

Lots of assuming in this thread.

It is not great but far from as bad as you make it out to be.

Are you going to freak out every time we lose a possible 4th defenseman?

Were you crying like a baby when the White deal went down?

There is nothing more priceless than the massive overreactions of many Flames fans. As bad as Oiler and Canuck fans at times.

Definitely sucks that we couldn't get Erixon signed. Sucks with a capital S. But, if we lost him to the draft, we would have gotten one 2nd rounder. Feaster turned that into two 2nd rounders and a prospect of relatively unknown value. Given the situation he was in, that isn't bad.

I hope that the NHL looks into Tampering... could you imagine if the Rangers had been talking to Grossman about Erixon for awhile.

Honestly, I am dissapointed to lose a good prospect, but I am glad that we did not sign someone that did not want to be here. Good return considering the corner Feaster was backed into.

I don't get that at all. How did they not know this until a few weeks ago? That makes nosense whatsoever. To me that screams really crappy management of assets, or really crappy management. They should have known this even before they drafted him (that's why they scout guys).

There is no way to prove tampering, but if I were Feaster, I would file a protest with the NHL for the principle of the matter.

I guess we aren't such a paradise compared to Edmonton and Winnipeg?

Maybe a nice wake up call for us about the smugness being shown to our neighbors.

I don't know what else to say... I'm somewhere between

"I hope Matt Cooke finds Erixon next year when he is ready to earn his next suspension"

and

"I hope Erixon and his agent get hit by a New York taxi being driven by Karma"

I really wish Erixon had told the Flames his intentions sooner so that we could have pushed for better returns. From an organizational standpoint the bounces never seem to go our way.

I'm happy Feaster was able to get 2 2nd rd picks for Erixon. Maybe that Horak kid turns into something but really the Flames did not have any negotiating power here so I am glad they got the return they did. Screw Erixon, kid isn't even in the NHL yet and he already has shown everyone his crappy attitude, good riddance loser.

To a certain extent, I would prefer quantity of picks over quality of picks. Drafting is such a crap shoot, so I would want as many lottery tickets as possible.

Are there any rules and precedent around tampering? Not suggesting, just curious

Or a possible #2 defenseman.....

Its a terrible situation.... Flames were forced to make the only decison they could which was to trade the players rights ...

For the record I believe Feaster made a decent trade (no matter if the returning assets turn out)

This looks bad on the Flames, not being able to sign their #1 prospect.
