No offense but the point still stands that there are better ways then allowing people to bank ridiculous amounts of sick time from year to year.
And there are a lot more people like my uncle out there then you think.

I can't believe that they haven't installed those community boxes in the older neighbourhoods by now. Guaranteed that they would have if not for the union.

I never said there wasn't better ways, in fact I agreed that banking sick days was dumb.
The amount of people who actually fake injuries to get a month off would be pretty small in comparison to people actually use the sick days for actual illness and injuries wouldn't you say? It happens in any job, people are always there to milk the system it doesn't have to be banked sick days or WCB or whatever.
The fact is that CP wants to get rid of banked sick days, I am cool with that. What I don't agree with is that the people who have done everything to the book and not used sick days for a month off when they feel like are the ones getting screwed. It's not fair to chop previously accrued days without compensation and this is what the union is fighting for. CP willingly gave accrued sick days for 15+ years and wants to take them away without taking care of their employees that handled the sick days correctly, I have no problem with the union giving it to CP about this issue.

I haven't been able to find this anywhere, but will a strike have an effect on super boxes since those are contracted out (although the mail would still need to be sorted, etc... maybe I answered my own question?).

Banked sick time really came in handy for them. There are people who abuse it but then that can be said about just about anything in life.
I'm from Calgary originally and have always hated unions. I have a better appreciation for them now that I belong to one, but they still can drive me crazy. The strugglers that get paid the same as me RGMFG.

That is what short-term/long term disability is insured for. They are not "sick days". Banking sick days does not make any sense. At all

Yes, someone is paying them to do that. So how does that make them irrelevant? Because you don't want the mail? That makes them irrelevant for YOU.
Mail service isn't going away.
Adaptation to parcel services and other services is probably a necessity for Canada Post much like it has been for the USPS. We haven't hired anyone in 4 years and the employment numbers continue to plunge along with the mail volume. There IS a bottom, however, and postal services still provide exceptional value for a service that nobody else can provide.
USPS blows UPS and FedEx out of the water on next day delivery as well. It is much, much more affordable and we remain competitive until you have to start referring to the deliverables as freight.
There is no doubt the industry is changing, but at its base, it is still amazing that I can send a letter to Table5 in NYC (hope he's still there!) for 44 cents and it will be there be Friday. Who else can do that?
I can send a crappy Christian Prophecy book (or as he called it, The Book of Doom) to To Be Quite Honest in Calgary for a couple of bucks and he has it in a week.
I can send Thor a letter in Iceland for less than $1.

Displaced Flames Fan is right. Plus no one else will deliver letters to those that live in those rural areas deep in the sticks.
Mail service should be a go through Thursday.

I paid 22 bucks for expedited shipping for Wednesday last week, and got my stuff Thursday, so much for the great service Displaced is talking about.

Can you imagine the cost of doing business if you have to send every little notice, bill, application etc. by Fedex?

For me it would probably be far cheaper. I only send mail from large city to large city. The people who get screwed without CP are the rural customers. Someone else would take over the profitable aspects and competition would end up lowering the price for the most profitable routes.

It is not a relevant question as CP is a quasi crowd corporation and there's no alternative and competition to CP.

I am supposed to receive a big package from China, was sent almost 2 weeks ago. I didn't get it today, was expecting it next week. But now with the strike will I even get it at all?
I need to confirm delivery in like 10 days or I am screwed out of my money if the package comes broken or something.
I also have to send something to the US for a return (I bought something off eBay), and if it doesn't get to him in a week I'm hooped again.
Anyone know if there is somewhere I can go to get answers, or anyone have the answers? I assume Canada Post stores (like at my London Drugs) will be closed.
