I'm so glad I didn't switch.

Asking what's 100Mbit good for is like asking what a Austin Martin is good for to go pick up the kids from school...

The answer is simply, because.

i switched, but i never signed a contract. i won't bother switching back though until Shaw's TV service comes up to par with Telus

Right now you probably don't have a use for that kind of speed, but you probably will in the future.

Although I would imagine the greater benefit will be in the increased speed of the backbone.

I use a lot of bandwidth and my highest usage to date sits at ~220 gb in a month. The thing I am questioning is... who is going to need to spend the extra $20 to upgrade from 250 mbps/1 TB data to 250 mbps/Unlimited once Phase 2 comes online?

I cannot fathom a situation in which I could download so much that 1 TB/month is not enough!

Haha, stupid people who kneejerked and are now stuck with Telus for 3 years!
The people who switched to Telus and signed a contract got an Xbox.

5 years ago I would have never imagined needing 100GB a month, but here we are.

I downloaded 800 GB in March, 650 GB in April and am at 289 in May. This is mostly a result of a data failure on my home server so I had to replace the lost media.

Anyway, it's totally possible to download 1 TB a month if you're using an automated usenet fetcher.

Wow, and I feel bad when I leave a torrent run at 20KB/s to improve my ratio

Why would you upgrade? In the event that you go over your 1TB they bump you up plans for that month. Its win win

LOL, so you think I switched because of a knee jerk reaction? Really? It has nothing to do with saving money, or the fact that I had looked at options for months and finally came to a decision? You're a funny guy lol.

Fine, let's go through my usage with the board then.

I use roughly 70-80gigs a month. Under the old Shaw, that wouldn't work. Under the new Shaw, great! Except...

I pay $30 a month for a full year for both TV and internet ($60 after). I only use the most basic for TV cause I don't watch TV that much, what with my social life and all. Under the new shaw, the basic package I'm looking at would cost me $84 (unless I'm looking at it wrong, if so, someone please correct me). Yes, I understand bandwidth and speed has increased, but speed wasn't my beef, it was the cap of 60 that I didn't like.

Seriously, I'm happy that shaw has decided to make changes. This means I have more options in the future should my needs change. But hey, if people didn't complain and just accepted their past practices, do you think these changes would have occured??

I can empathize with TheyCallMeBruce. I had my finger on the trigger ready to cancel my Shaw services if they didn't change their position on UBB. I'm not sure where I would have gone, but all options would have been considered. Probably an independent ISP, even if that meant paying a little more, and once hockey season came around, I'd probably get a minimal package with Telus just for hockey.

I'm glad I waited, and I'm glad that Shaw changed the tune regarding UBB. But a consumer backlash takes place on many fronts, including people cancelling or scaling back their services. There must have been more than just a handful of people that did it as well.

Has Telus ever released/updated their UBB policy?

I mean if Telus comes out with comparable limits to Shaw then what does it matter who is on what?

It's kind of a sad state of affairs if you're trying to point and laugh at someone because they're on one ISP while you're on another.

Not sure if anyone is doing that exactly. Remaining Shaw customers (me included) need to give a big thank you to those who either cancelled or switched providers, as it surely had an impact on the new plans and the reconsideration of UBB.

I'm now going to benefit from the outcry over this issue, and owe everyone who made a big stink a big THANK YOU.
