RIM is recalling about 1,000 faulty BlackBerry PlayBooks, which feature an operating system that prevents some users from performing the initial set-up of the device.

In a statement, RIM said the recall only applies to 16 GB (gigabyte) versions of the device, and that most of the affected PlayBooks had yet to be sold to consumers.
I don't know what's more embarrassing, that they had to recall or that they've only sold 1000 of their 16 GB Playbooks.

For awhile ebay and B&N were collaborating on a sale and selling them for $199!

All Android apps work fine with it except for a weird thing where the marketplace works best in landscape orientation as holding it in portrait won't load the full list and you only get page 1.

I used the old Autonooter method from the MicroSD card that roots it and then use my own launcher and button shortcuts. It retains the original Nook Color functionality but that isn't useful for Canadians as you cannot buy books without an American address on file.

I believe the latest methods are much better in that the replace the entire system with the latest Android build but so far I have been too lazy to try it because everything works just fine for me as it is. The built in Youtube player seems to work great, all the apps I've tried work fine aside from a few of the animated wallpapers not loading (but most do).

The only other issue I've had is finding a browser that works with multitouch as the default one didn't and I settled on Dolphin and that works great so far.

The thing is very fast, runs 3D apps very quickly and even PS1/PSP emulation works. Supposedly flash support is out this month as well.

All of my issues and experiences may be due to me using an early autonooter build that simply roots the B&N firmware. Things have improved substantially to the point of flashing an entirely new kernel onto it but I've been lazy.
Just curious - have you tried any of the honeycomb builds on your Nook Color?

Going to pick one up this weekend, I think.

That isn't true. Apparently it is a new version of the OS they were about to release.

There were 45000+ Playbooks sold on launch day:
Quote:
Despite that early criticism, there are hints that the PlayBook has been selling at a respectable clip. Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek estimated that, based on sell-through surveys taken at Best Buy and Staples, the tablet sold at least 45,000 units at launch.

picked up the playbook 32 gb on saturday and so far its ok. I do like the size compared to the ipad (gf has one) but not much i can do on it right now. email, bbm and other apps work good on it but I cant seem to open any excel files to do work on. surfing the net and watching videos is good but a bit slow compared to the ipad. some of the images in my email dont come up as well. cant visit some of my other sites as the browser does not support internet explorer that is on the playbook.
will update you guys once Ive had a chance to play around with it for a bit longer. So far not impressed with it but am liking it a bit more today

It is getting hard to actually buy one of these simple because every month there appears to be remarkable improvement. Xoom may have been underwhelming at launch, but since then Tab, Slate, Transformer and now a new Tab are all pushing each other. Honeycomb 3.1 is supposed to fix a number of issues.
The progress is amazing, but it also makes me a little gun-shy that anything I get now would be obsolete in 6 weeks.

I wonder how Samsung managed to install Honeycomb on a 1st gen iPad? That's pretty neat.

It's like buying a cell phone or a lap top.

The top end state of the art product you buy today, is no longer that a week after.. but it doesn't mean it's obsolete, not even close.

Once you buy something (computer, car, house, etc.) stop looking until you're ready to buy again. You'll only end up feeling disappointed that your new purchase isn't so awesome anymore.

It's a bit glossy, but reading is fine. I haven't used it for PDFs yet

Can anyone recommend a good tablet for combining work/play? I want something that is good with email, can open (maybe edit) word documents, read .pdf files, .ppt presentations, take notes and save them in an easy to find way . . . etc. Are any of these tablets able to replace a laptop yet with functionality?

I currently have an iphone for personal and a blackberry for work but, to be honest, I really prefer the iphone.

If you like your iPhone then you'll like the iPad. You can do all the things you mentioned.

No tablet will fully replace your laptop yet but the iPad has come close for me.

Last month, Apple filed suit against Samsung, claiming patent and trademark infringement from Samsung having allegedly copied Apple's "technology, user interface and innovative style" in its Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets.

Courthouse News Service now reports that a federal judge has given Samsung 30 days in which to provide Apple with samples of a number of unreleased hardware models in order to assist Apple with determining whether it would like to request an early injunction to halt the claimed infringement.

Samsung Electronics was told Wednesday to fork over five of its not-yet-released mobile phones to Apple. Sitting in Federal Court in San Jose, Judge Lucy Koh ruled that Apple deserves the quick production of cell phone samples three months earlier than usual in the litigation process, though she drew the line at requiring testimony from Samsung executives.

"Apple has demonstrated good cause for some, limited expedited discovery," said Koh. "While Apple has not yet filed a motion for preliminary injunction, courts have found that expedited discovery may be justified to allow a plaintiff to determine whether to seek an early injunction," said Koh.

The Samsung models in question include the Galaxy S2, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Infuse 4G, and Droid Charge.

Picked up a Nook Color on the weekend. Insanely good value. Runs honeycomb surprisingly well; though it's still a bit buggy for day-to-day use. I'll stick to 2.3 for now.

OC'd to 1.1Ghz and runs rock solid. Love the form factor too. Absolutely the best value in any tablet.
