What are your needs?
If it's just bumming around town in a cheap and reliable way, I'd recommend something like a used Fit, Civic, Mazda 3, Impreza.
If saving money is important, chances are you can get a better deal going the private route, as sometimes people don't really know the market value of their car or are more susceptible to negotiation.

2002 Mazda Protege 5.
Good reliable little car, its a hatchback so its useful for a young couple that might need to haul stuff. FWD, good in the snow, pretty nice interior design and ergonomics.

She's not really sure, she's the type that just wants a good car that won't have much problems in the future... but don't we all...

So I incorrectly read the first part of the original post. I missed the word car.
That made my initial take of the post as his GF is dead and he needs to replace the GF and needs a different car to attract some new talent. You don't want to know what I was thinking on the part that mentioned diagnosing his GF with something and it not being worth the fix.....
Anyways....
How about this. A nice family sized car though it might run a bit more tha 9k. 4 doors for her and sporty for him.

Stick with the Japanese small cars if efficiency and reliability are her top concerns.
For SUVs, she could look at Rav4s and CRVs. I think a Chev Tracker and its sister cars are decent as well and they have Suzuki guts.

I hate crossovers.
But a Rav4 and a CRV aren't crossovers, IMO. They really are small sport-utes, aka sport-cutes.

I happen to have a 2008 Yaris with around 50-60k Km on it. Good little car, automatic, great on fuel, No recalls on it :P
It might be more then 9000 though, probably looking for 10500 to 11000, still under warranty for 2 more years I believe. It is my wifes car and we have been mulling with the idea so if you are intestested we can decide for sure.

Poor college students willing to spend $9000? AWESOME! While I don't own a Civic, I've heard nothing but good things as far as dependability and easy maintenance are concerned. Servicing and insurance should remain low for such a car. For $9000 I'm sure you could get something around the 2005 year range.
