I dont advise this at all, but if you are taller and put your knees up against the seat at the beginning you can stop that. They will try to recline it for a while, give you the look back like wtf - so long as you stand (sit) your ground and dont cave under pressure it doesnt take most people alot of time and they stop trying.

I never recline my seats in economy - its just a common courtesy. The only time I recline is if I get up and notice the people behind me are recliners, then I recline simply out of spite.

I have to agree with the anti-reclining crowd. Unless you plan on going to sleep; what you are doing is adding extra space for you at my expense. And it's not like we have ample space to begin with.

I thought it was common sense to not recline at another's expense? Guess I was wrong.

You should really only book those seats if you cant fit in the regular seats.

Im 6'8" and it really annoys me when someone has already booked the bulk head and its some 5'4" lady who wants extra room to sprawl... Often the airline bumps them in favour of me though.

Unless you're incredibly obese I dont see how the seat recline intrudes on your space. I'm going to keep reclining, I sleep on almost every flight to make the time pass quickly. If I don't recline I wake up with a horrible neck cramp.

Oh I could kill recliners. On my flight from Edmonton to Vienna, I had a lady recline her seat from the moment the seatbelt light went off until the stewardess told us to start stowing our trays and prepare for landing. That was also the flight with an entire high school band on it that decided it would be awesome to take pictures with the flash on all through what was an overnight flight.. I could have killed someone during that eight hours. I really could have.

I am with the anti-reclining crowd too.

Even on my long haul flights to/from Asian, I will sleep and I won't even recline my seat.

Some people seriously need to learn some common courtesy in regards to flying. I'd exclude babies because you can't quite control them, but everyone else... sometimes, they can drive me nuuuuts.

Just as an aside.

If bts is reclining in front of you and you lost the initial seat battle, when he/she gets up to the bathroom it doesnt take much pressure to "push" their seat back to normal seating position (dont worry you wont break it) - and then you live to fight another day.

If someone cant see why someone who is 6'4 whose knees are almost touching the seat anyways might be a tad pissed off when someone reclines their seat removing the precious few inches between pleasant flight and wondering if I should strangle the person infront of me with my Westjet headphones and wondering if I could get away with it - and in the process causes their tray table to now instead of being flat top be at a 5 degree delcine so their laptop is less comfortable to use - well then that is why I have my own personal war against seat recliners.

Also, as an aside, I really dislike (normally old people but could be anyone) the people who decide the plane is their own personal walking track because they cannot sit in a seated position for more than a few hours. Its much less noticeable on Westjet but its sickeningly noticeable noticeable on transatlantic with these people trying to complete the Boston marathon while walking from one end of the plane to the other - sit the frack down and dont look at me weird if I try to trip you - also and get your damn hand off the back of my seat, if you are going to walk they least you could do is not put your grimey hand on my seat.

Its pretty weird that the manufacturers provide a reclining button but you arent supposed to use it. I'm pretty tall myself at 6 feet and the only time I have an issue is on the cheapo charter airlines to mexico. But thats the airlines fault for cramming an extra row in, not the other passengers. Also god forbid the elderly move around a bit to avoid letting their legs atrophy, some of you guys are hilarious.

First come first serve, I paid my money and I get my exit row seat.

Edit: However if prodded by the FA's I would be more than happy to take the jumpseat in exchange (damn you 9/11).

Manufacturers also provide a manual pull latch on all exit doors of the plane, would you utilize that 30,000 ft. in the air?

inclining is a necessity alot of the times on long flights......but i do try to only incline a little, way less than a full incline since i don't want to screw the guy behind me, but when the person in front does a full incline if you want to watch that little TV alot of the times you also have to incline almost all the way or the tv is way too close. also i find on a lot of planes, the window seat has the additional advantage of that little nook between the seat in front of you and the wall where you can shove your feet in and get some extra legroom

well I've got back problems and if I sit in the upright position in those craptastic seats the pain starts to make me black out so I have to recline as much as I can and stick a pillow under my back so I can tolerate the flight. I also have restless legs syndrome so if I get stuck in a window seat that's not a bulkhead and I can't recline it's pretty much a nightmare where I get off the plane dizzy from pain. If my squirminess and reclining annoys you I'd gladly trade your minor annoyance for excruciating pain.

Wow, didn't know there was an anti-recliner back lash. It does help, even if it's minimal on Air Canada. Maybe it's perception, but the aircraft on International flights are bigger, so the recline and increase comfort from it is even more noticable. After paying 40% in taxes, you should be able to maximize your comfort that you paid for.

One solution perhaps, I fly pretty often, but I always ask the person behind me if they mind. So far, nobody has ever said that they did.

I normally do not recline, and I do dislike recliners, but if I feel the need to recline, I always check with the person behind me. It really makes no difference either way.

Fair enough, but dont feel bad when all you feel on your back all flight long is my legs because you thought you deserved extra leg room over someone who actually needs it.

Like i said, as soon as most airlines see how tall i am they bump someone from the bulkhead even if they have already given out the seats. Ive had it happen a bunch of times. They reassign the other peoples seats at the gate.

Exactly what should be done. No one will say "no" unless they are the biggest ####### in the world, and in that case, recline anyways because it's your call in the end, not his.

I personally find it so nice when someone gives the courtesy ask, because they know that someone is behind them, and I'm not left spending the rest of my flight in a silent rage at them, I then don't really care that the seat is a bit closer to me.

It's the people who know the 2 people next to them and they all recline and then continue to talk to each other and play cards and such, all with the reclined seat. If you are not sleeping, keep the seat up!

The only seats that don't recline are ones that would recline into an exit row.

That includes the row in front of the exit row, and if there are two exits rows then the first exit row also won't recline.

The back exit row reclines just fine.

Every airline does. We dispensed with the need for exit row seating by having a baby. Now we get on first no matter where we sit, and we usually get an extra seat because people try to move away.
