It is not just the players either it is the families. Even with that kind of money who's wife would want to be in Winnipeg when they could be in Calgary or even LA, Denver or Dallas for 10% per year less? What is the point of having the money if there are such limited local amenities to spend it on? Say what you will about Miami, Nashville, Phoenix or Tampa, they definitely have some very swanky areas. Sure some of the Canadian players might like it but likely not the Euros or Americans. Even the younger players would rather enjoy the night life of the bigger cities over Winnipeg. Even the prospective owner everyone touts, Thomson, doesn't live there, what does that say?

You make Winnipeg seem like hell on earth. True, the winter is cold, and takes some time getting used to. However, it's a great place to raise a family, and there are a lot of benefits to living here that not many cities have.

Plus think of the local endorsement deals, how much is a player going to get paid there as opposed to a much larger media market?
|
You really think players in Calgary would get significantly more than in Winnipeg? I do not recall that being an issue 15 years ago.

So is Green Bay (metro population 282,599), but they manage to do pretty well in the NFL.
|
Green Bay and Winnipeg are so different it's not even worth comparing. Green Bay Packers is enriched with tradition and history as well as a large national fanbase. Plus the NFL kinda makes over +9 billion in revenue each year, so they have all the money in the world to help out smaller markets if need be.
Maybe if the NHL made that much money, then it wouldn't be that much of an issue business wise to give Winnipeg a club again. But shoot, I doubt the NFL would even bother giving a team to Green Bay in this day and age if they didn't have one already. Packers are a fairly unique franchise in the North American landscape.

and if a strike happens in the NFL and owners slide on the idea of a salary cap the Green Bay Packers may in time suffer the same fate Winnipeg has.

Apples and oranges. NFL revenues are based primarily on attendance and national tv deals. Green Bay doesn't have to worry about differences in regional broadcast revenues. And they don't have a facility that seats significantly less than all the other facilities in their league.

So sick of this sh*t...
It's not happening.
And for the record, Winnipeg cannot sustain a major franchise.
It's simply a money issue.
Too many "what if" scenarios such as Canadian dollar.
At least cgy/Edm have a larger market. They can survive a few years in a bad situation but Winnipeg would be the smallest market, period.
Zero room for error... And no one in the NHL top brass wants to deal with another team folding.

Alot of this I agree with except the dollar, that is one of Winnipeg's positives. Our petro dollar is likely to be worth a $1.50 in the next 5 to 10 years.

the point is this.... if you were a young professional making high six figures or more, could ply your trade in many cities and had your choice of locations where would you rather live? A bigger city with more entertainment options, amenities, with a more temperate climate or Winnipeg? Winnipeg will be by far the smallest city and more so it is fairly isolated, there is nothing within 3hrs by car that can provide any extras. On the upside every player will be a celebrity and be adored where ever they go. If that is what the player wants that could be a perk too, but there is a pretty big downside.

Of course half these young professionals grew up and learnt their trade in one horse prairie towns that make Winnipeg look like New York.
I think in comparison with California, Florida, NY or Toronto all the other NHL markets suck if all the player is just looking at locale, but most players are small town canadian kids who will be happy to go there if the team is well run. Players don't have unlimited choice either, they get to pick amongst 5 or 6 teams generally, and if you are Swedish Winnipeg is less of a culture shock than Dallas or Nashville.

They are not going to have much of a choice. The problem is going to be the free agents. Once they have played in larger more temperate venues and have become accustomed to that lifestyle do you think they are going to want to go there?
They will have a choice on where they go and while not everyone can go to NY, TO or Cali, they will have choices. Fancy that discussion around the dinner table. "Well honey we can go to a large city that is kinda cold with excellent shopping and high end amenities surrounded by other large cities with the same, we can go to a large warm city with excellent shopping etc kinda close to some other warm cities, we can go to one of those cities we went on vacation to last winter or..... we can go to this frigid small city that is surrounded by tundra. Oh and guess what... i will be gone a lot of the time when the weather is at its worst.
This is what is being seen in Edmonton now. They have a fine crop of youngsters but not a whole lot of good free agent talent. In order to have a good team you really need a mix of both. Even to stay in the running they will have to pay a premium to attract and keep those players and then the issue of salary cap and small stadium come into play. The ticket prices will have to go up to support it. It could work but the odds are really stacked against them.

If the team is well run it will be fine, if it isn't (Edmonton) there will be problems.
and, for the record, I don't see it working long term, I think they are putting the team there until they can find a better market or the league contracts and places like Winnipeg start to make sense.

Unfortunately the Canadian economy is so tied to the USA, I can't see that unless the govt here undergoes radical foriegn oil policy there will be no petro dollar benefits.

The NBA relocating to Oklahoma killed any chance of it acquiring an NHL team. To drive this point across, Oklahoma's CHL team actually led all minor league teams in attendance for several years. When they moved up to the AHL, roughly the same time the Seattle Supersonics relocated to Oklahoma City, attendance dropped from 9,500 to just over 4,000 in just 2-3 years.
If a team relcates to another city before Winnipeg, it would definitely be either Quebec, Houston, Seattle (if they build a new arena), Hartford (in talks about building a new arena to attract an NHL team), or Hamilton (if they can get another rich owner to throw a couple of hundred million dollars at the Leafs for territorial rights).

I've been told for the past while that Atlanta will move to WPG. NOT Phoenix.

I hope Phoenix moves to the Peg and Atlanta survives there just long enough for Quebec to get their new arena up and going. I am all for the awesomeness that would be having the Jets and Nordique back in the NHL.
