Hopefully that means the spent fuel rod pond will be getting water again.

About time, the explosions likely wrecked the plumbing infrastructure for most of those reactors anyhow.

Kind of ironic that a nuclear power plant is destroyed by a lack of power. hmm

I wonder what we'd feel, if anything, from a 9 magnitude quake in Washington area..

Are you sure about this? Last I heard, they had been working on restoring power to the 1 and 2 reactors only. 4 they have been dousing with water.

Here is the most recent information I can find on the reactors' status:

Nothing ever happens with all this fear mongering... people like to get scared for the hell of it. Its the same reason why people get so enthralled with alien take over movies and natural disaster movies, we are always intrigued by the possibility of worlds end. Its been going on for centuries and will continue long after all of us alive now are dead and our grandchildren start doing the same thing.

You won't be saying that when Jesus comes back. Any day now.

Things are starting to get back to a new normal. Now that the hype and journos admitting they went hysterical abound, the focus for most people has shifted to helping those in the affected areas. If you can, donate to your local Red Cross who have been effective I getting supplies where they're needed.

A very good friend of mine and his partener hastily organized an event here yesterday. We had been together at another friends on St Pattys day and he had been sent a video of a girl somewhere giving out free hugs and any donations were given to the Red Cross. So as we sat eating corned beef and drinking a Guiness, he decided to do the same in the middle of downtown on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The RC provided signs saying "free hugs" in english on one side and in Japanese on the other. Had one of those official RC donation boxes and a Japanese flag to attract attention.

Gotta say I was surprised at the response. Until a few women arrived people were actually avoiding crossing the street to even get close to the spot we were. However after a while it became evident that this was about nothing more than trying to help the stricken nation and contributions came in pretty steady....I wasn't there till the end but it was somewhere north of 500 bucks at that time.

I was watching a national Geographic documentary on Chernobyl last night, it was hard to believe how willing and able the Soviets were in throwing away lives.

The firefighters that went out were not informed that the fire they were fighting was in the core. Within hours most of the firefighters went down to radiation sickness.

They sent a unsuited man crawling underneath the vessel to check for leakage of fuel.

When they started building the sarcophagus (sp?) they sent thousands of Soviet soldiers to carry debris and throw it into the pit, they could only work for a total of three minutes and in those three minutes exceeded their life time dosage, most of those soldiers and firefighters died of the after affects, and the videos of the firefighters were disturbing to say the least.

For another comparison, eating 70 pounds of the newly infected spinich found in Japan is equal to the everyday X-Ray.
