If they're already using the parking revenue around the arena to help pay off the arena how in the h*ll are they buying these rights from Hulszier to help pay for the bonds??
|
I understand they don't charge for parking but yeah, how can they get the parking rights from the Coyotes in exchange for the loan, if they already own the parking rights?
It's a gift and they would lose in court.

Glendale mayor delves into Phoenix Coyotes, casino, budget at meeting
http://www.azcentral.com/community/g...no-budget.html
Mayor Elaine Scruggs on Tuesday broached the possibility of cutting services or raising taxes to manage the city-owned arena if anchor tenant Phoenix Coyotes leave for Canada.
Those in attendance, many who were longtime residents who have regularly attended the mayor's informal gatherings over the past four years, were given a worksheet to explore the impact of the hockey crisis on the city's budget.
The one-page sheet laid out options for funding Jobing.com Arena should the Coyotes leave, including taking revenue from various city departments such as police, or raising taxes.
"I need your thoughts," Scruggs said. "We may be dealing with this in two to three
weeks. Do you want us to cut expenses or raise revenue?"
Residents in the crowded church focused more on questions about the city's deal with a Coyotes buyer, than finding consensus on alternatives
"We don't know if the bonds will be sold," Scruggs said. "No one knows."

The first step to make up the loss of revenue the city will look to raise taxes.
The next step they will say that they will be closing parks and public swimming pools and libraries.
They don't look at the possibility of holding events in the arena that would bring in 6-9,000 people 41 times a year?
Say an AHL Hockey team, Indoor lacrosse, or swap meets along with standard things like concert series and car shows.
Are the people currently running the MTS centre in Winnipeg that much smarter than anyone who could manage the Glendale arena? Is Glendale a bad market for everything??

Winnipeg owns the building, controls 100% of the parking. Plus they own the businesses around the Arena. I believe that is also considered in the revenue projections for a "possible NHL" team in Winnipeg.
No idea on Glendale.... I am sure they are doing everything possible.
I just hope this sage will finally end... what a mess.

Actually Phoenix is a traditionally tough market for sports, all of their teams have struggled to get fans in at times.
You have a high latino population and a high retiree population that traditionally provide a limited market to sell to, you also have a large transplant population, people who didn't grow up in the area, who may like a sport but support the team for where they came from rather than adopting the local team.
It is hot out most of the year, which seems to put people off the idea of sitting in arenas, they tend to go golfing instead.

In Winnipeg there is one facility for those types of events. In the Phoenix area you have the Suns' arena, the DBacks' park, the Cardinals' stadium and possibly some facilities at the universities competing for those events.
And except for the AHL, which might not be a big enough draw to make sense in the Coyotes' rink, all those other events would be going to Glendale's rink regardless.

I haven't followed this issue much, but a swap of NHL-AHL teams between Winnipeg and Pheonix should help this issue, shouldn't it?

Here's hoping CalgaryPuck finds itself $100 richer next weekend.

Looks like Coyotes are staying
Second intermission of the Coyotes/Blackhawks Sen McCain (aka just lost to Obama in the last presidential bid) and former atty general of the state of AZ (Grant Woods) both coming out in support of the Hulsizer offer after concessions. These two are among the very most powerful politicians in the state especially on the Republican side. IF they supporting it GWI will likely be forced to back down, McCain is virtually untouchable in AZ.
http://coyotes.nhl.com/index.html
go to ownership tab and then Hulsizer interview.

I seem to recall McCain being in the fight of his life against a tea party candidate for the republican nomination last time out.

I doubt the GI is going to do anything different, as a moderate McCain may well be respected but his party has moved considerably to the right of him.

Doesn't endorsed by Palin get him the Tea Party vote? If GWI opposes now they look like the bad guy. Hulsizer is taking all the risk now by guaranteeing the parking money saying even if the projections are off any losses he will make up.
Even the case GWI is using as a president (City North) they lost and were almost brought before the AZ state bar on professionalism issues. The other guy in the interview with McCain... Grant Woods... has more gift clause related court cases than anyone when he was Atty General.

I think GWI claims victory by making Hulsizer come in with more money and calls it a day. As a tax payer advocacy group most of their concerns have been addressed.
Now Winnipeg reporting the same thing

Oh well two more years of sucking at the box office will put the team in bankruptcy, allowing him to move, maybe to Hamilton.
Anyone know if he has a deal allowing him to move?

Big surprise. Hulsizer must have been ready to do this all along, but waited as long as he could.
This will be a money pit.
