Chernobyl was bad, to be sure, but a huge portion of the damage was due to the Soviet cover-up.

For those interested, here's a good image on the current status of the Japanese Nuclear Facilities:

Reactors 5 and 6 are missing from the graph, they are in essentially the same state that 4 was in, they were offline but now have low (but less dire) water levels in the storage pool and rising temperatures, but no building damage.

The situation with the storage pools in 3 and 4 has gotten worse and 3 is alleged to be bone dry, possibly emitting huge amounts of gamma radiation. They were dumping water on it from helicopters a few hours ago, but they can only work for 40 minutes per day due to the radiation levels.

They were mentioning on CTV that number 4 is now a no go area because of the massive amount of lethal radiation and that they didn't know how they were going to be able to restore water to the pool

Just now on NHK they said that they've said that (according to Tokyo Electric) there is still water in storage pool 4, but 3 is almost dry and they've admitted that it's vital that they get water into the pool today. They're going to start using police water cannons to get water into the pool.

Also mentioned, the Canadian Medical Team that went over to Japan came home already because of the uncertainty of the Nuclear Issue over there and their inability to deal with it if something happens.

Isn't the biggest concern with reactor 4? From what I've read it sounds like they suspect the water cooling the spent rods has fully evaporated. This has the rods heating up towards a meltdown with not a whole lot of containment. Also the radiation is so high that they're not sure how to get close enough to cool the rods/coolant back into the tank.

I get the feeling if there is a way to get water to spent fuel pond some brave soul is going to kill himself to make it happen.

Thats what I'm kind of wondering, its not like the fuel rod temperature is at like the heating element on your stove, from my understanding they are in the what? thousands of degrees, is a water cannon going to be able to provide enough water to cool them off?

Probably wouldn't last long enough to do anything.

Yup. That's basically the scenario. The fuel level is indicated as critically low at the bottom of the image.

And a guy following the event (same guy I copied from before) gave this:

Visual inspection of building #4 via JSDF helicopter crew indicates water levels in the cooling pond are high, and additional water is being supplied via helo dumps and water cannon. The #4 reactor is scammed and completely empty, as it was undergoing maintenance at the time of the earthquake.

Where I am here in Northern China a lot of the international companies have been evacuating their expat employees over concerns that the situation in Japan will worsen and that winds could bring danger all the way over here. Seems so strange to me.

Michio Kaku is an extremely smart theoretical physicist. He helped in developing string theory and he looks to popularize science to the public by doing TV shows and writing books and such. I actually have 2 of his books. That said, I don't see any benefit in what he's doing in this situation.
