Leafs allow 7, lose by 2 to Rangers.

Man did the Leafs play an undisciplined game tonight. Not only as far as penalties, but as far as defensive play. The team allowed 7 goals on 46 shots. 3 of the 7 Ranger goals were scored during major penalties to Sean Avery and Andre Roy in the 2nd period. Roy, making his Leafs debut after being claimed off waivers from Minnesota and spending some time on IR, took a spearing penalty with less than a minute to go in the 2nd period.

The positives: The Leafs 2nd line continues to play well. Datsyuk has 3 points and the line is a +2.

The negatives: A lot of negatives for the Leafs tonight. 7 goals on 46 shots, those aren't pretty numbers. Henrik Lundqvist can't be blamed for the loss, but he didn't play that great either. On top of this loss, the team received word prior to the game that Wade Redden had a setback during the morning skate and will miss some more time. The star defenseman still hasn't played a game for the Leafs after being acquired from, ironically, the team that beat the Leafs tonight by scoring 7 goals. Looks like we could have used him against his former team.

Panthers Take a Bite out of Penguins
Round One: Penney

The Panthers did some major line juggling tongiht to see what would happen. What ended up was a BIG win against the Panther rivals from Pittsburg.

Milan Hejduk, although he scored a PP goal, failed to impress GM Dave Penney.

"We played Milan on the 3rd and 4th line tongiht but it still didn't work". "Hejduk has failed to take advantage of his opportunities to score some big goals for us". "No Matter where he is moved, he struggles to score".

Modano opened the scoring at 11:56 of the 1st to take a 1-0 lead. Hejduk then extended that lead to 2-0 with a PP marker at 14:25. There was no scoring in the second. The Penguins managed to score two goals in the 3rd period by it wasn't enough as Antti "Power Play" Laaksonen buried the Panthers 3rd goal of the game to seal the win. After a tough loss to the Thrashers, the Panthers are now looking to rebound and begin a brand new streak.

The Panthers are also very happy to have handed the Penguins thier second consecutive loss!

Goalie Statistics Evgeni Nabokov (PAN), 26 saves out of 28 shots, W, 21-7-3
Jose Theodore (PEN), 29 saves out of 32 shots, L, 20-10-2

Power Play Conversions

PANTHERS 1 for 7
PENGUINS 1 for 4

Game Stars

Pens follow impressive streak with 2nd straight loss!!
The Pittsburgh Penguins have started another streak, this one they hope does not last quite as long as their last. Coming off a 12 game unbeaten streak that included 11 straight wins the Pittsburgh Penguins have now lost 2 straight. GM Goffie was less then impressed with the start his team got as they went into the 1st intermission down 2-0. The Pens were not able to put a dent into the Panthers lead despite playing a much better 2nd. The Pens managed to score twice in the 3rd period despite only firing 6 shots, and had many more quality chances that saw two posts and many shots sail wide or high. The Pens look to get back on track on when they travel to Pheonix to play the team that ended there 11 game winning streak the last time they met.

"I'M TOO SEXY FOR THIS GAME"
Devils goalie Jani Hurme professes how good he thinks he is after Devils win. After the game Hurme poses for photographers at the press conference.

It's not exactly a secret that some professional athletes just can't get enough of themselves. Usually this isn't too much of an issue in the game of hockey, as the players try to play the role of modest everyday people to the media to stay away from the ire of fans. Perhaps it is because most hockey players came from good wealthy homes where they know their fathers and as a result tend to avoid plain stupid and outlandish behavior. But once in awhile someone steps up to become a media whipping boy. New Jersey Devils goalie Jani Hurme is quickley taking on that role with the New York media, and added to it today with some outlandish comments after leading his team to a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

First in the actual game itself where the flamboyant Hurme turned in another solid performance turning aside 26 shots as the Devils got past the Lightning 4-1. The Devils initiated the scoring 10:52 into the contest when red hot Ales Kotalik potted his 14th goal of the season. Taking a feed on his off wing from Luc Robitaille, Kotalik was able to get the one time shot past Chris Osgood. The Lightning did respond before the period expired as leading scorer Curtis Brown tallied his 15th when he was able to redirect Dean McAmmond's shot past Hurme.

The Devils took the lead for good in the second period with a couple of goals. Arron Asham continued his solid play for the Devils as he was able to sneak a wrist shot through the legs of Osgood to make it 2-1 Devils. Chris Neil extended the lead to two goals when he banged home a rebound on the power play for his 9th goal of the season. Jani Hurme was sensational turning aside all 10 shots that the Devils sent his way, looking calm collected, and cool. The Devils sealed the deal late in the third when Aaron Miller's seeing eye point shot found it's way through a maze of limbs and sticks and into the Lightning cage. Both goalies were good in the third as each team collected 13 shots, but it was the arrogant chain smoking Fin who kept them all out of his net.

Already under heavy scrutiny for his chain smoking habits, and affliction for the New York nightlife Hurme announced after the game today, that he think's he is too Sexy for the CPHL, and that he would start skipping practices to do some film shoots for several of New Yorks top modelling agencies. In fact in a post game rant that captured the attention of the worlds media capital. "I am too sexy for this game, too sexy for my pads, too sexy for my jersey. I am playing really damn good right now. In fact I think I've been the most under rated player in this league all year. But, it's my off ice personality and looks that I don't think gets the attention it deserves. I mean I look fabulous, I'm the most stylish person in this league, and I look much better with a cigarette than Brad Pitt ever will. In fact I'm off to go get my face printed on every major magazine in this country right now!" Ranted the netminder to an unsuspecting media after the game before he storme off on a Harley with smoke in hand, and no helmet.

When asked what he thought about his goalies comments, GM Sylvanfan stated that he'd rather have guys who thought they were too good, than guys who didn't think they could play the game. Still Syl was concerned that Hurme would lose focus, and announced that he would start Mike Morrison next game. "Morrison, now thats a guy who is too good for this league" quipped the Devils head man. "Hurme's played well lately, but I don't even think he's the best goalie on this team let alone the planet. But I'll let others judge him on the rest of his comments."

Next up for the Devils will be back to back's against the Wild. A team who may be featuring a fomer CPHL Lanny MacDonald award winner by the time the two teams play.

LATE FLURRY NOT ENOUGH, CANES TOPPLE ISLES

Oleg Tverdovsky of the New York Islanders battles Ivan Huml of the
Carolina Hurricanes for a loose puck Monday. The Islanders went on to
drop a 5-4 decision to the Hurricanes.

UNIONDALE, NY - Jordan Leopold scored with the extra attacker to draw the Islanders within one but a late rally wasn't enough as the Isles dropped their second straight.

The Islanders outshot the Hurricanes by a 11-5 margin in the third period but it wasn't enough as Byron Dafoe, a former Islander, turned aside every shot but one in the last minute to help his team escape with the two points.

The game remained close throughout as the Isles took a 2-0 lead in the first period only to have the Canes answer with their own pair to end the period.

The teams would trade second period goals to go into the third period tied at 3-3, but two late goals by the Hurricanes a minute and a half apart put the Hurricanes up by a pair with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game.

With Jocelyn Thibault on the bench and the extra attacker on the ice, Jordan Leopold's shot from the slot drew the Islanders within one with under a minute to go but the goal would be a little too late with the Hurricanes hanging on for the victory in the dying seconds.

Oleg Tverdovsky, Keith Ballard, David Vyborny, and Jordan Leopold scored for the Islanders while Alexander Ovechkin, Mike Comrie, Stephane Yelle, Mike Komisarek, and Wayne Primeau answered for the Hurricanes.

Jocelyn Thibault was pulled for his second straight game after Primeau scored in the third a minute after Komisarek gave Carolina the lead.

Neither team's powerplays clicked for any goals as both teams went 0 for 2 on the night with the man advantage.

The Islanders are in Florida tomorrow evening where they'll face the Panthers who defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins this evening.

Game Notes - Sergei Gonchar continues to struggle as an Islander and failed to tally any points on the night... Tverdovsky had a goal and two assists and was named the game's second star in a losing cause... The newly formed trio of Huselius-Hudler-Hossa has been disappointing thus far and will likely get split up in tomorrow's game against the Panthers.

Ugh...it appears that the equipment manager for the Blues left the bag marked "Character" on the charter bus. Losing to the Bruins is not exactly exclusive to the Blues, but 4-0 is hardly an appropriate result for a supposedly competitive Blues team.

GM NoPants was seen on the phone throughout the game, but it's not clear whether he was working on a deal or calling Dial-a-Bottle.

Rangers 7 - Leafs 5

Another wild game for the Rangers, in an effort to keep Roloson sharp the Rangers played their Backup once again. This time Mika had a very shakey game letting in 5 goals on 19 shots (before he was pulled from the game). Rangers on the other hand fired 46 shots on the Leafs and were able to score on both of the Leafs goalies. It was a real pleasant surprise to see Alexei Yashin have his first three point game as a Ranger. Alexei is starting to score points which is exactly what the team needs.

Game Stars
1 - Pavel Datsyuk (LEA)
2 - Jim Vandermeer (RAN)
3 - John LeClair (RAN)

Game Highlights

Most Goals - 7 players tied - 1 - (talk about an even attack)
Most Assists - 3 players tied - 2
Most Points - LeClair & Yashin - 3

Next Game vs Ducks
