Hotels in Downtown Toronto
My buddy and I are headed to Toronto for UFC 129 and hoping to get a Hotel downtown. Unfortunately because of the fights there are no specials downtown so we are looking for something somewhat inexpensive.
I've only been to Toronto once and that was about 15 years ago. Are there certain areas we should stay away from? Right now we are looking at staying at the Hilton Garden Inn City Center

What do you consider "somewhat inexpensive". I like staying at the Royal York, and I have been able to get some really cheap room rates there, even though it is generally a really pricey hotel. They will match pretty much any price you can find online.

well from what I have been checking out it seems to be around the 300 per night range I've been seeing. I don't want to spend that much pe night but maybe that's what the going rate is these days I don't know

Royal York is quite nice but expensive. It would be a 10 minute walk to the Skydome.
Failing that, if you want to be a little further away just make sure you're on the subway line. There are a bunch of hotels like the Marriott here

Does the subway line run to the Skydome? Sorry for all the questions.

No, but it's close enough. You can get off at Union (where the Royal York is) and again, it's a 10 minute walk outside or through a skywalk.
Alternatively you can get off at St. Andrew station and walk pretty much the same distance, but with fewer crowds I'd think for an event like that.

I got an amazing rate on a room at the King Edward (really nice hotel), and it was within walking distance to the skydome... you just have to search online for the best rates.

If you can swing it, the Royal York really is the best place to stay. It's in walking distance to a little Italian Restaurant called the KitKat Italian Bar and Grill on restaurant row. The concierge at the Royal York will be able to tell you how to get there. My favourite place in Toronto to eat by far. Have fun

Just try Hotwire and Priceline to see if you can get a deal. Hotels will definitely be at a premium with the UFC show that weekend.

The Super 8 in Chinatown is not bad and is reasonably priced as far as downtown hotels go. I got a jacuzzi room for $120/night.

I'm staying at the Delta Chelsea but that's probably out of your price range. We're paying $630 + taxes a person for a round trip flight and 2 rooms for three nights through Expedia so it ends up being a pretty good deal.

Yeah, the Drake is awesome, seriously one of the coolest hotels I've ever stayed in. It's upscale, not cheap, but not one of the super-expensive hotels either. It's similar to what Hotel Arts is trying to be: not only a hotel but also a nightlife hub, with high quality restaurants, lounges, a raw bar, a rooftop bar, and underground club, all in the same building.
Actually, I see it's $189 for their cheapest room now. Pretty sure it was more in the $120 range when I stayed there about three years ago.

i have stayed at the marriott on bloor in yorkville it is what you'd expect from a marriott. - it is a block away from the younge st subway station.
or if you are adventerous you can walk from the skydome (it is about a 30 - 40 minute walk)
it is also close to some good shopping in yorkville - if that is your thing

Last summer I stayed at the Royal York on Fairmont Gold, which is private check-in, private concierge and lounge, full breakfast included, appetizers from 5-7 and I only paid $130 per night on a rate I got from Expedia. I've never been able to get a rate that cheap since, but you can stay there in a regular room for $130 on Expedia. It's well worth it, beautiful hotel, excellent service and walking distance to most major attractions.

The more north you from the ACC/Skydome area... the cheaper it generally gets (Until you hit Yorkville and the Yonge/Bloor area).
Keep it close to the subway line and you'll be set. It's a 10 minute walk (all covered) to get to the skydome from Union Station.
I'd be surprised if you could find a good deal at the Drake or Royal York on that weekend... but if you can they are both real nice hotels. I've heard that the Delta Chelsea at College Park is usually fairly priced (and its pretty much as central as you can get for downtown Toronto). Ive also heard from friends who have stayed in the city that The Strathcona Hotel has decent rates given its location et all. (it's right by the Royal York/Union Station)
Try not to go East of Yonge if you can help it...although its not as bad people make it out to be.

I have used Priceline a few times in TO with great results. Check the betterbidding forums for an idea of what you might get. They are usually pretty accurate.

lol concidering we had floor seats but sold them because the profit we could make was to much to pass on i'm not too concerned about the price.
I just don't see the reason for paying 350 a night when I can pay 190 which I found on priceline for the Hilton downtown. It looks pretty centered to everything. Yay or nay?

You could pay less for a room if you decide to use Hotwire.

I'm sure I could but I really don't like the fact that I can't see what Hotel I'm booking. For the extra 20 bucks I'm liking the priceline option better.
