The straight dude's guide to Brokeback
Our Brokeback Mountain thread was obliterated in the Great Hacker Attack Of November but . . . . this is a pretty funny column by a gay guy called: "The Straight Dude's Guide To Watching Brokeback Mountain"
You are a heterosexual man. And you have no personal beef with gay people. You’re educated and fairly socially liberal and occasionally listen to NPR and you don’t like to see anyone bashed or discriminated against. You’re no homophobe. You’re proud of yourself.
But your girlfriend/wife/common-law/female or whoever loves that adorable Jake Gyllenhaal has already stated her intentions. When it’s her turn to pick the Saturday night date-movie, you’re seeing “Brokeback Mountain.”
“But I am a heterosexual man,” you’re thinking, “very, very, very, very straight.” And you’re kind of freaking out as the release date quickly approaches — and even the expression “release date” is making you kind of jittery.
. . . . . .

It would take an awful lot...actually its basically impossible... for my girlfriend to get me to go to a romantic tragedy where the leads are male/female.
It is impossible, under all circumstances, where the romantic tragedy features male/male leads.
There is nothing that could convince me to go. I just don't want to see it. Even female/female romantic tragedy, where those leads are impossibly hot, wouldn't make me want to go. I'm just not interested.
Now, if I had a choice between only two options... watch Brokeback Mountain or re-watch War of the Worlds, well, I'll take the electric chair, thank you very much.

I don't understand why guys get all worked up about this stuff! Not a big deal. There are so many films with gratuitous lesbian scenes that I have sat through, why can't men do it?
Oh and its unbelievable that even in a movie about gay men, there has to be a topless woman! And Anne Hathaway of all people! Wasn't she in the Princess Diaries?! Doesn't seem right!

Hell, I'll watch the movie. Other people's sexuality neither bothers nor scares me.

Like I said in the other thead, guys will pay all day to watch two women making out but can't stand even a brief glimpse of two guys doing the same thing . . . . so, the only conclusion is that its actually not homosexuality that's the problem.
It's just two guys making out that's the problem!!!
I'll watch the movie but whether I do in a theatre or not is another thing . . . . I might want to have a fast forward button handy.
As a sidenote, I think I had remarked earlier that some of the stills looked like they were on Moose Mountain west of Calgary . . . . and that is in fact the case as per an article in Avenue Magazine this month.

REDNECK ALERT!
I just don't understand what is attractive about a big old hairy ass. If I wanted to fifth base, I'd want to do it to a chick. If I wanted to get fifth based, I'd... Well, I guess I don't know. File me under baffled.
As far as watching it goes, I'd probably be in the "as long as I've got a fast-fwd button handy" camp. Ditto for M/M kissing. I could probably handle the love crap, but spare me the bearded man affection.

I love good movies.. If it's a good movie, chances are I'll watch it. Watching two guys getting busy with eachother doesn't make me uncomfortable, why should it? You're not gay just because you watch a movie that has gay scenes in it.. contrary to popular "conservative" thoughts

Jeez this movie is one of the most highly reviewed and well-crafted stories I have heard about...ever. As a fan of well made movies this is a must see. The 'gay love' aspect can be a challenge for some people, but I hope most of them get out of their comfort zone and into their growth zone by challenging themselves to judge the movie for themselves.
Like the [hilarious] article stated, there is only 60 seconds of shinagins in the movie...big deal. Not a lot of fast forwarding to worry about...
a pause button for Anne Hathoway though.....thats another story
PS LMAO at 4x4's post

Yeah, I'm sure this'll get flamed, but Kermit... I gotta say... Just because you aren't gay doesn't mean you necessarily should be ok with watching gay guys (this one's for CBE and EG...) FIFTH BASE.
I'm not down with alot of things and therefore really don't want to watch them performed or acted out. Whether it be man kissing, fifth basing, kosher killing, gruesome murder, bottle picking or anything else that gives me the shivers. It's not wrong to not want to see something. It doesn't make you whatever-phobic, it doesn't have "conservative" connotations, it's just something that you don't indulge in and really, REALLY don't want to see.

Well said.
Secondly, is Anne Hathaway considered hot, or does it not even matter if it means getting to see her chest?

Well I guess the question I'll ask you is why does sodomy give you the shivers? What is it that makes you uncomfortable with watching it? Again the question of why sodomy is unacceptable to you, but only if it's a guy receiving pops up, same with lesbian scenes? I have no intentions of being invovled in that activity but it's not going to make me squirm.
My jab at conservatism was aimed at phobic reactions of conservative groups towards gay themes..

I can't speak for anyone else but I think that Anne Hathaway is hot (and a pretty good actress too). The fact that she goes topless is not a really a big deal either
...but you know what they say:
If you've seen one...you want to see 'em all
I keed..I keed

Good question. Why does sodomy give 'ol 4x4 the shivers? Probably the same reason why picking bottles does. IMHO, it's just nasty. Is that wrong? I don't recall saying that YOU aren't allowed to hump any butt you can get your hand(s) on.
Really... Spare the PC crap.
Back on topic, the real 'turnoff' is the love story with the male twist. Love stories are already a snoozer for me. Two men? That fall into the bottle picking category... Not for me.
