"On a further date he will offer his paper resignation."
"Unltil then, he will serve. He expects a future leadership race."

Bittersweet for the Wildrose Alliance - they are going to claim all kinds of victory on forcing him out, but the PCs with a strong leader can regain lost ground. And if the Alberta party can strip the Liberals of any support, the next election could be real interesting.
|
That would lead to an Alberta election that actually means something.......I've waited 30+ years for this.

I didn't see that coming, but he's a liability to the Conservatives so there may have been some external pressure on him. If Morton wins the leadership race, that could be bad news for the Wildrose Alliance (and good news for the Alberta party and Liberals).

Could someone highlight some of the reasons why Stelmach is so hated?
I barely pay any attention to provincial politics....

I hope the Alberta version of the Tea Party does not take control of the party.

Great question. I would bet most people that say they hate him can't give any solid reasons why. I am not saying that to pick on people but I think a lot of people just follow the crowd when it comes to politics.
I am saying most people. I am very sure their are some bright people here you have a clear understanding of why Stelmach is a bad premier.
Note: I put myself in the category of not being able to give 5 solid reasons why Stelmach is a lousy premier. But he is. LOL

Reasons I've heard (I personally thought he was alright. Nothing good, but nothing over-the-top in terms of detriment to the party):
- He is a really quiet guy. Compare him to Klein and it doesn't seem like Stelmach can stand up for himself.
- Initially, Stelmach was (and arguably still is) too much of a nice guy. He bent over to Bronco's will quite often for provinicial funding and then got Edmonton all upset when they didn't get equal treatment.
- He is not a great public speaker, which hurts his image.
- He was given the whole royalty issue right when he took power...basically a no-win situation for whoever makes a decision there.

He also instated minimum drink prices for bars. Now there's really no reason to go to the Back Alley.

Ed was never qualified from a business point of view. It was a sham the way he won the nomination, and Alberta's prospects economically have suffered everyday since he took office. Goodbye Ed, I wish I never knew you.

That's a mark in the plus column, right?

Wow, there must be something else behind this. Maybe in a few months time we will hear he was having Italian President style parties with the Oiler cheerleaders.

Under Stelmach we saw Alberta's largest deficit in history and first in 16 years. I'd say that's reason enough to not like the guy.

THAT is what pissed a lot of people off, he just got in. He wasnt elected or anything. People were given no choice, they hated stelmach but didnt want liberals in power.
Plus the royalty scam was terrible.
