They are in the toilet.
Are you sure? I mean, are you sure there's not one in the floor as well? I've done this job on at least 5 toilets and never smelled sewage. Am I just lucky or something?

there's no p traps under toilets. Usually you'd stick a rag in the drain pipe so you don't die of methane posioning.

I will definitely post a trip report.
for example if a tile floor was put in and the toilet flange is lower, if you didnt put on a flange extension, you could just double up the wax rings.

did you have a new floor in at some point?

there is a vent pipe, most gasses escape there.. but im sure if left open long enough you would smell some.

I've installed about 5 toilets and used these every time. Handier and no messing about with wax.

You can get them at Canadian Tire

http://www.fernco.com/plumbing/wax-free-toilet-seal

And regarding getting the flange bolts to stay upright when you're putting the toilet on (annoying) Home Depot has bolts now that have clips that hold then upright for installation.

I'm off the hook. My tenant said he and his buddy would just fix it themselves (It was in my rental property). Best tenant ever.

Thanks for all the help though.

The long story was that the small job wasn't done quite right by my neighbour, but it all turned into a big mess in the basement (not in a main room, more a storage room... thank heavens) which we got a professional to come and fix.

The small crack I posted about was just a small part of a bigger problem. It all got fixed, but we moved within a year of having the issue taken care of.
