Looks like it's alot more than a ripple effect

Bow Trail from 26st to 11st street is absolute gridlock. And it's 3-4 lanes!

It's brutal, and I've been dealing with crappy rush hour traffic on Bow Trail for close to three years now, as they prepped the LRT extension AND repaired the bridges (which took forever.)

I would like to say there will be reprieve in three weeks, but there's always something bogging down traffic in the area. I'm extremely frustrated with it, as are thousands of other Calgarians I'm sure.

Ya, this is ridiculous, took me 40 minutes from Strathcona again today. There are a few points where Bow didn't move at all for a good 4 minutes. Absolutely enraging.

It's just as bad inside the core as well. Not only is it a major inconvenience to not be able to use 14th, all the other routes are completely fatad as well. Last night I drove down 12th ave and every single block, the left lane was backed up with 30 or 40 cars trying to turn north.

Is it over yet?

NB Crowchild has been very slow even as far South as 33rd and Flanders in the mornings this week. Luckily I'm heading South and only for one exit on Crowchild in the AM, but it does look pretty ugly going NB.

yeah that's why we need a C-Train!
Hopefully short-term pain for long-term gain.

A couple of major delays mentioned in the West LRT alert I received earlier:

  • Until Thursday, Jan. 27, eastbound Bow Trail is reduced to one lane between 26 Street S.W. and 24 Street S.W. This lane closure is the result of a natural collapse to a sanitary line. The lane closure is 24/7 and will result in major delays during the morning commute. City of Calgary crews anticipate restoring eastbound Bow Trail to two lanes early Thursday morning once the repairs are complete.
  • On Tuesday, January 25, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. eastbound and westbound Bow Trail will be reduced to one lane in each direction between 33 Street S.W. and 29 Street S.W. to repair a pothole. Traffic delays are expected through the day.

The launching truss looks awesome when you're driving (south) down the hill on 19th St in the NW - even my (2-year old) kid noticed it today. It's very remarkable.

I hope one of those National Geographic shows (World's Toughest Fixes, Megastructures, etc) is doing a show on the LRT construction. I'll be watching for sure.

^While it is cool to see and the equipment itself is one-of-a-kind, this type of project is not as rare. The launching truss' last duties prior to arriving in Calgary were working on Seattle's LRT line, and after it is done in Calgary, its services are needed in Asia as it gets shipped off to Taiwan.

A show on it would be cool though. In the meantime, here's some cool videos:

This video is a couple months old, but gives some interesting looks and perspectives of the construction along the line. The November 2010 Progress Report:

And today anyone trying to take 17th Ave as an alternate route to get around the above mess is going to run straight into a lane closure just after 33 street (17th is down to one lane in both directions there).

It seems like the City is trying its best to make coming in from the west impossible.

Yeah, coworkers that use Bow Trail/are on the west side/Aspen are absolutely pulling their hair out.

Not only is Bow Trail bogged down with redirected 14th street commuters, but narrowing the lane creates a pinch point from about 37th street to Crowchild Trail.

I have never been so frustrated with commuting in Calgary in my life, and I life in the inner city.

I take 17th Avenue from Signal Hill to 24th Street, then take Bow to 12th Avenue to my office. There was a lane reduction due to construction on 17th past 33rd that bogged down traffic all the way back to Sarcee. Then, the lane reduction on Bow past 24th further bogged down traffic.

Argh.

Yeah. 17th Ave. seemed quite backed up heading westbound just now. I didn't experience the entire length of it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was backed up right down to McLeod Trail.

Perfect storm with all with the extra lane reductions plus 14th Street being closed. Hopefully this is the worst week of the entire project.

A bad time for the water main break, for sure. Nothing that the construction team could do about it though.

A couple of shots of the Westbrook Station work from my iPhone this morning.

I noticed another change in traffic management as well. The amount of "green" time on 17th Ave has been increased. When I was waiting at 17th and 33rd St, the wait time was much greater. Was probably changed as a result of the traffic issues experienced on Bow Trail recently.
