Random Cat Question

We've tried a couple times switching our cat to more expensive food but he turns his nose up, he will only eat Purina Cat Chow, and only the regular version. We give him some wet food as well so perhaps they balance out a bit. He is 14+ and going strong so it can't be all bad.

As far as water, he drags his water dish around and likes to make it slosh, he likes the movement for some reason. He also will zip into the bathroom when the toilet is flushing, he occassionaly goes in for the odd sip (we discourage this if we catch him) but mainly seems to enjoy watching the water circle.

Weird animal...good times.

Maybe you watching the cat meant more than checking the furnace and playing with it. Perhaps giving it water was in the job description lol.

I would say you might be right; if the water taps had not been shut off and/or there had been bottled water available.

But yeah, as I said earlier I do think part of the reason he asked me is that he knows that if anything seemed out of the ordinary I would notice it and also deal with it.

I know a cat that was fed grocery store bought (Whiskas, Friskies, etc.) food and lived to be 18, and was healthy up until the final days.

Still, I wouldn't feed my cat store brand (Special Kitty) food.

Whoops! A cat in my neighborhood used to always come to my yard and I'd put out a bowl of milk for it. It didn't seem to mind as it would always come back for more the next day.

Oh yeah, they love it. And I'm sure it depends on the cat and the kind of milk, so not every cat will get the squirts.

I can give my cat a little bit of 1%, he will get sick, but he will line up for more.

Anyone know of a good deal around town w/ water fountains for cats? Mine just came down with a bladder infection as well, so I want to get her to drink as much as possible.

I had the cat-it dome one before and it seemed to break pretty quickly. Thanks.

So my 8 yr old cat only eats dry, but then he drinks water like crazy. We've tried giving him wet food, but he refused to eat it, even after a week. The little SOB waited us out. Knock on wood that he doesn't get the UTI as he's been very healthy so far.

My cat is the same as MRC's - she will not touch wet food, meat or anything aside from her dry food.

I actually put water in cups (not bowls) for her - she usually refuses to drink out of a bowl unless she had to.

So is there an update on why your d-bag of a friend left his cat without water?

Unless we're missing something that seems pretty cruel and unusual.

Actually I think I did figure it out. I found what appears to be a cat water dish on the floor. If I had to guess I'd say the cat knocked it off the table where the rest of the food is. I'm also guessing she normally doesn't eat on the kitchen table; so she may have had her system thrown off a bit.

So tonight I filled both water dishes, and I will go check on her every night instead of every other night like he suggested. Just seems like she's drinking a lot of water.

And just for the record; this buddy does get some slack from me. Last year just before my rabbit died I had to take an emergency trip out of town. (My grandmother died.) He had to pick up her new food from the vet, and patiently spoon fed her for an hour per day. There's no doubt he saved her life. Yes, she died a couple of weeks later. But at least I didn't have to say goodbye to my grandma and my beloved pet on the same week.

As an aside, cats should not drink water out of plastic bowls. Believe it or not, it can lead to a condition called Feline Chin Acne which my old kitty got and was gross. The vet recommended using a glass bowl and that solved the problem.

Also, most adult mammals are lactose intolerant. It is the default human condition as well, but lactose tolerance is something most humans developed over millenia of agriculture. In fact, many of the staple carbohydrate sources around the world were initially virtually indigestible for humanity and took generations for humans to develop the capacity to digest and grow more readily digestible strains.
