Between dying of diarrhea or thousands of other and having my eyebrows waxed I think I know which option I would choose. Beauty pageants are a sickening thing but there are so many worse things that exist within humanity that are never thought of.

I guess where they can be some influence is what the culture says about beauty pageants. It would be nice if American culture stopped reinforcing such behavior, but that's not going to happen any time soon unfortunately.

Umm..my cousin's idiot wife did this to her kids in Canada in the early 90s. She had the 'trophy room' and she would smack her kids in the face if they didn't do their 'performances' correctly. (My cousin divorced her thankfully) It's not just happening in the American Culture, nor is just 'Americans' who reinforce this behaviour.
Just sayin.

Perhaps your cousin should avoid marrying American women and moving them to Canada?

He is Canadian, married a Canadian in Chatham Ontario, and she took her kids to pageants all over Southern Ontario. The pageants exist elsewhere aside from the Southern US.

I've always thought that show was done for the pleasure of sick pedophiles out there. I even find it disturbing that the stores in malls let little girls dance around in the windows during special events. aka.. lululemon. It's just not right.

I know but it's reinforced more in the States. You can never get rid of it, but American culture seems to reinforce vanity and exploitation of children more than Canadian culture. But its a problem in Canada too, no doubt.

Stores have children dancing in the windows? I agree I have no interest in seeing a beauty pageant but I have never seen a store with kids dancing in the windows, that sounds like more of a gymnastics team type thing or a ballet club both of which I don't associate with pedophilia

I guess the same reason people slow down to look at car accidents, or why people complain about FOX/CNN pundits but still watch them.
She watches it and then complains about it... and yes, I see the irony.

Totally agree. My wife was watching this the other night and I actually got quite pissed off with it and told her to turn it off. It is one of the most disgusting shows on television right now. I can tolerate some of the other crap she watches on TV when she wins the remote control war, but this show just send me over the edge.
There was a 14 or 15 month old competing in one of the pagents and her mother was actually spray tanning her. Unless your name is Snooki WTF does a 15 month old need to get a spray tan for? Not to mention she was spraying her face with no goggles or anything on.
I cannot believe there are people that are so sick out there that they put their children through these pagents that objectify them at such a young age.
I wouldn't be surprised if one of these "parents" eventually got charged or investigated for putting their kid through that.

I can't believe all you guys who watch this stuff with your wives. TV's are cheap these days. I have more TV's in my house than people. If my wife watched this I wouldn't even know, let alone argue with her about it. I do know she watches a lot of hgtv stuff, but probably not this.
I'll be in the basement watching sports.

We live in an open space concept condo. If she is watching TV and I am on the computer, there is no getting around being in the same room.

All of it starts with commercials and television programs. These parents want their children to be "the next big star". So not unlike Tiger Woods father who made him breathe golf 24 hours a day throughout his childhood, or Michael Jackson's father demanding his children sing, act and dance all day long, these moron mothers think their children will become the next big runway model making millions a year. Its all about the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow...that chasing the tail syndrome is prevalent in the western world.

A California mother has lost custody of her 8-year-old daughter after she injected the girl with botox in preparation for a beauty pageant.

This is good news

If you made a show called Hockey Dad. And filmed it in a similar fashion and found the right families to follow you could make minor hockey seem abusive.
So the question is there normal people participating in these pagents who it is more about playing dressup and singing than this obessive crap shown on TV. I don't know the answer.
As for whether or not it is abuse I would say the majority of people do not cross the line however some probably do.
The standard for removing ones kids from parents has to be extremely high. There is no requirement to be a good parent or a loving parent. If we start drawing lines of where abuse starts here you are walking down a dangerous road.
