Default Red Letter Media (Plinkett)

I've been watching this dudes movie reviews since he was just on youtube and was doing star trek reviews. He's a genius both comically and with his dissection of bad movies.

www.redlettermedia.com

If you haven't watched any of his reviews yet, start with either Star Trek Generations or Phantom Menace. Both are comic gold and had me howling with laughter.

His latest work is going to be the review for Ep 3. I kid you not when I say the anticipation for this review is white hot with red letter geeks like myself. He keeps teasing it and then throwing us reviews of weird movies like "babys day out". The way he unveiled the preview for ep 3 was so great too

The review for the Phantom Menace had a great trailer too:

His use of Pizza Rules is awesome.

On to the reviews

Star Trek Generations
My personal favourite, the review of Generations. I think it's cuz I'm a huge TNG fan at heart. I suggest watching every single review of the Star Trek movies if you're a fan like me.

Star Wars Phantom Menace
The movie review that made him famous. 7 parts of genius. Enjoy. His dissection of what the movie does wrong is amazing. Watch part 1 and you will see what I mean; his character analysis is brilliant and helps you understand why you hated the movie, even if you couldn't explain why in great detail.

Episode 3 review is up, and hillarious.

I cant help but wonder and agree with Plinkett; did the story of Anakin becoming Vader need to be told? Clearly Lucas didn't know how the prequels would work, as the scripts and stories are rushed and full of holes. ugh. anywho

Lol, I just watched about 2 hrs of his Star Trek reviews. Pretty damn funny. And even though the nerd meter does peak in these as Amorak suggests, I don't think you have to be a fanboi or nerd to see the humor in them. He could pretty much use any big budget Hollywood production to point out a bunch of inconsistent logic and plot holes. Thanks for the link.

What are his credentials for reviewing movies?

Personally unless someone really knows what they are talking about with regard to films I don't listen to their analysis/reviews. I would trust a friend who knows me and my taste.
If I'm going to listen to some random, I would like to know that they have studied film and know the ins & outs.

It's a review for both entertainment purposes and real dissection of a bad movie. Relax and enjoy yourself. And if you havent' watched the prequels yet, I dont think this set of reviews will either dissuade or persuade you from seeing them

I don't want to pile on but honest question:

When have you ever read movie reviews from people that give you the impression that they know what they are talking about?

And I mean really know the ins and outs and have studied film. I can't remember the last time I read a movie review that talked about the sound editing, cinematography, editing, the pacing of the three acts etc etc.

I'd say it is pretty rare. I've only seen the one for Episode I and I have no idea if this guy went to film school but he knows a hell of a lot more than 99% of TV, newspaper or online movie reviewers.

He pretty much nails it with his quote:

"Anyone who likes these movies is either a drooling idiot who likes lightsabers or is a baby."

The guy is clearly involved in the film industry and/or has a great knowledge of film theory.

agreed with cecil and tinordi. his explanation of pacing problems and tone issues are beyond what ive ever read in a review. his dissection of the character problems and story problems for episode 1 is also remarkable
