Default Boney M Front Man dies december 30 2010

http://www.cbc.ca/arts/music/story/2...rell-obit.html

actually this is kind of Flames related as Boney M has a song sampled in that "Barbara Streisand" song they play after each goal. Most people will remember them for Rasputin or their Christmas albums. They were uber popular in the late 70s, as one of the world's biggest acts. As a kid I remember my aunt and uncle putting one of their records on for me and me running around dancing. Certainly some of my earliest memories.

In any event, this little guy was found dead. I still list their concert in December 2001 as the most enjoyable I've ever been to. It certainly wasn't the best, but I laughed until I couldn't breathe for the entire time they were on stage. It was awesome.

Bobby Farrell kept running around yelling "Are you Ready? and he was totally bald except his fricken pony tail, like a grade A cheeseball, but the women went bezerk - even the young ones.

If you haven't bought either their Christmas album or greatest hits album and given it to your parents, you should. guaranteed it gets played in the CD player or the ipod.

I used to love that band. I listened to their "Gold - 20 Super Hits" cassette tape so much I wore it out...

This was my favorite song of theirs though...

Found dead in Russia...oh the irony.

Pretty entertaing group though...had no idea he was that old, or they were still a touring group for that matter.

As good as some of their music was, wasn't it discovered a while back that Boney M was kind of a Milli Vanilli kind of thing, where the front man just lip sync'd? The producer behind the group did all of the male vocals in the studio apparently. Anyway....

Yup and that producer was the guy who created Milli Vanilli later on too....

Sad, that concert here in Calgary 2001 was amazing, one of the most enjoyable things Ive seen. People were so into it and had such a blast!

I know they were tied to Milli Vanilli, but I think they sang the original highly produced recordings, but then just sang along to a track in their live performances (which is actually rather common, especially for those who dance).

Nope it was a milli vanilli sham from what Ive learned the lead singer was a former exotic dancer I believe he was for show on the stage, he never sang on the recordings or sang live, not really sure if he could sing to be honest.

I was at a Jam a few years back and the guy running it claimed "he could play any song as long as he knew of it" so I hollered out Rasputin by Boney M.

The look on his face was priceless.

To add to the irony;

Rasputin died on Dec 29, 1916 in Saint Petersburg.

Boney M front man Bobby Farrell died Dec 30, 2010 in Saint Petersburg.

Interesting that. Maybe it was Rasputin reaching out from beyond the grave. Sounds like Farrell had a more peaceful passing than Rasputin though (for details, listen to the song!).

There lived a certain man in Russia long ago
He was big and strong, in his eyes a flaming glow
Most people looked at him with terror and with fear
But to Moscow chicks he was such a lovely dear
He could preach the bible like a preacher
Full of ecstacy and fire
But he also was the kind of teacher
Women would desire

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on

He ruled the Russian land and never mind the czar
But the kasachok he danced really wunderbar
In all affairs of state he was the man to please
But he was real great when he had a girl to squeeze
For the queen he was no wheeler dealer
Though she'd heard the things he'd done
She believed he was a holy healer
Who would heal her son

(Spoken
But when his drinking and lusting and his hunger
for power became known to more and more people,
the demands to do something about this outrageous
man became louder and louder.

"This man's just got to go!" declared his enemies
But the ladies begged "Don't you try to do it, please"
No doubt this Rasputin had lots of hidden charms
Though he was a brute they just fell into his arms
Then one night some men of higher standing
Set a trap, they're not to blame
"Come to visit us" they kept demanding
And he really came

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
They put some poison into his wine
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia's greatest love machine
He drank it all and he said "I feel fine"

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
They didn't quit, they wanted his head
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia's greatest love machine
And so they shot him till he was dead

(Spoken Oh, those Russians...

Interesting factoid: Farrell died in Saint Petersburg on the anniversary of Rasputin's death, which was also in Saint Petersburg.
