As a supervisor, my investigation would center around the carrier and trying to figure out who signed for the package. I mean, there's a reason you have people sign for stuff.....and this is exactly the scenario a signature is supposed to help prevent and/or resolve.

I'm not sure if this is just UPS or the norm for these companies but I ordered a laptop and I wasn't home one day so UPS left my laptop right in front of my door. I thought I needed a signature before pickup but apparently nope? Not sure what happened if my package was stolen... or I reported that I didn't get it

UPS came by last week with a package from Amazon. I didn't get to the door on time as I was sleeping and he woke me up. But when I ran down stairs and looked outside I yelled "hey!" and he said "oh hey, I left the package under the mat for you". Good thing it was only comic books and I heard him come.

I won't hate on him, but I hate when they leave your packages outside of your door. Way too many a-holes in this world that will just take the package.


A couple years ago I saw like 4 huge packages outside one of my neighbors house. I wanted to ring their doorbell and tell them about all these packages as they were quite big and their was 4 of them. I felt bad because they were outside for almost a week (the family must have gone on vacation) in the cold snow.

I don't know if it's different in the US but in Canada, the addressee is not required to sign. Whomever answers the door can accept it. So if it was misdelivered by a carrier unfamilliar to the route, the signature is almost useless.

Next time, request a signature. I work for UPS, and yes, I have left packages at the door. I'm not usually delivering, but I have. Considering how many packages have to be delivered in a certain amount of time, its not worth it to waste ones time (and gas) to sit and wait for a person to come to the door. The protocol is to place the package in a location that is safe, and possibly viewable (in a mailbox, between the doors, etc.)

The responsibility of a successful delivery lies with the driver. Packages should be left in a safe environment. If the driver deems it unsafe, they are instructed to not leave the package. Occasionally, packages get miss-delivered, but that is understandable considering how much volume is being moved. If the driver knows the route well, they can pretty much pinpoint where and when they delivered the package.

As for brokerage fees-> go through a broker. They are insane, I do agree. dealing with people to collect these fees is sometimes awful. The driver is trying to make a living and do his job, not take money from you.

There are different service levels for USPS and I am sure Canada Post is the same. Not all packages require a signature here. However, the OP did mention that the person they were in contact with at Canada Post claimed that their was a signature obtained.

Just an update: It appears there was insurance on the package so they are trying to piece together receipts for the contents. Also, Canada Post is going to investigate in order to find out where the package actually went.

Right, there are levels of services but when a signature is required, it doesn't matter who signs for it, as long as they answer the door. So if it is misdelivered, having the name of who signed for it won't mean anything.

Unless the carrier recognizes the name of the signing customer. That's assuming it was misdelivered on the same route of course.

It is just a starting point for an investigation, and one I would use. Not a sure fire way to find out what happened at all.
