I think everyone is missing the point here.

Why was this allowed to happen? It's highly likely the US Government had the capacity to make this whole thing disappear long before any cables were released let alone known to exist in 3rd party hands. The fact that Wiki-leaks is an established organization with a history for doing this suggests that intelligence agencies should have a really good idea of what they are up to.

The response from the American government is what people focus most of their attention on. But don't get me wrong, they are a fascinating read for anybody who loves history. Primary sources this fresh are pretty darn rare. Most confirm assumptions, but I found a few rather insightful. I encourage everyone to have a look.

I just love Ron Paul. He seems so sensible to me....
Notice he mentions the false flag Gulf of Tonkin incident...

Anyways, John Young (one of the founding members of Wikileaks, who resigned and now runs cryptome.com) claims that Wikileaks was near bankrupt for two and a half years after it's creation, and was told from other Wikileaks founders that they were trying to secure funding from the Open Society Institute, a George Soros organization.

Wiklileaks did acquire funding shortly after his departure, so he does not know for sure where it came from.

I think Wikileaks may be co-opted to some degree, and could be using good information along with disinformation to buy credibility on one hand and spread propaganda with the other. I guess it depends on who is paying the bills.......

Also, John Young went on to say that Wikileaks is going to drop some bigger bombs that include:

- Files on weapons of mass destruction
- War plans of all nations, for and against one another
- Reports and training literature on black site prisons and torture chambers
- Files about clandestine spy agencies and their operatives
- Files on human rights abuses
- Files about billionaire political meddlers
- Files about global tax collection agencies
- Files about the Vatican’s meddling in global political affairs

This should be quite interesting moving forward.

I haven't really been following this very closely. How did they get hold of information to pretty much everything? I thought it was just military documents.

The latest leaks (and only about 1% of them have been released) came from Embassy cables (telegram conversations) were leaked by a US soldier who somehow had access.

I had no idea a soldier had access to so much information... unless he was a general but I don't think that was the case?

It was information that he stole using a computer virus. He is now going to be spending what is likely the rest of his life in the miserable existence known as detention barracks.

Lol, it wasn't stolen using a computer virus. For the Iraq docs, he logged in to the CIDNE system, chose "Export to Excel," then burnt it onto a CD titled "Lady GaGa Music."

For the embassy cables, he logged into a different system, but did basically the same thing. He exported them then burnt them to a CD (or flash drive, can't remember which).

No hacking mumbo-jumbo, no secret Matrix moves. The US just believed it was secure to allow privates to have access to this material that is easily exportable and can be copied to CDs and/or flash drives.

Basically, the US was being a massive idiot.

I continue to be amazed at the number of posters who seemingly continue to have blind faith that their government is benevolent and knows what is best for them despite all evidence to the contrary.

He said some of the cables they have contain references to UFO. That's all.

Anyway, interesting revelations about the poisoning of Litvinenko awhile back that was linked to Russia:

Quote:
Russia was tracking the assassins of dissident spy Alexander Litvinenko before he was poisoned but was warned off by Britain, which said the situation was "under control", according to claims made in a leaked US diplomatic cable.

[ . . . ]

. . . The memo records that "Safonov opened the meeting by expressing his appreciation for US/Russian co-operative efforts thus far. He cited the recent events in London – specifically the murder of a former Russian spy by exposure to radioactive agents – as evidence of how great the threat remained and how much more there was to do on the co-operative front."

The memo contains an observation from US embassy officials that Safonov's comments suggested Russia "was not involved in the killing, although Safonov did not offer any further explanation".

Later the memo records that Safonov claimed that "Russian authorities in London had known about and followed individuals moving radioactive substances into the city but were told by the British that they were under control before the poisoning took place".

The claim will be rejected in many quarters as a clumsy attempt by Moscow to deflect accusations that its agents were involved in the assassination.

Close enough to raise eyebrows. any UFO references from the U.S government would be exciting just to see how they try to worm out of it.

LONDON — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said on Friday that there were some references to UFOs in "yet-to-be-published" confidential files obtained from the U.S. government.

Look what leaked out into the news: http://www.okcupid.com/profile/HarryHarrison/tests

Can anyone confirm its authenticity?

(I'm quite happy to be your TMZ for the day)

So he's sharing an award with Hitler, Khomeni, Stalin Kruschev and Andropov, De Guaille, Nixon twice

It must kill Assange that he has to share the award with George W and Obama.

But the Time list is about news, and not great deeds.

And he's been granted bail after being previously denied by another judge for being at risk of absconding

This is why these sort of leaks need to happen:

http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Europ...ss-for-justice

According to the WikiLeaks documents posted by El País newspaper, former US ambassador in Madrid Eduardo Aguirre wrote in May 2007 that “while we are careful to show our respect for the tragic death of Couso and for the independence of the Spanish judicial system, behind the scenes we have fought tooth and nail to make the charges disappear.”

Yeah, so I've done a complete 180 on this. While I think those who stole the information should be disciplined, I'm okay with the leaks provided that they are done with discretion and aren't unecessarily causing deaths by giving away informants or other sensitive intelligence data.

I wonder what's happening with the families of the dead reporters hosed by the Apache. Hope they start raising a fuss about it too so the US military can at least pay out something to them for the unjust deaths of their loved ones. This type of thing really shouldn't be hushed up like the Spanish reporters case was.
