Advance to about level 16-17 and get a weapon that can do 40+ damage. After that, you should be fine to wander wherever.

I'm neurotic. I didn't want to miss anything the designers wanted me to see, because it seemed like they had put some thought into how the map restricts the player's movement in the beginning.

But I really did get the sense that there's no single path or wrong time to do anything, even though you can miss some things if you're not taking your time. You get to make lots of actual decisions about things big and small.

Maybe I missed it, but how do you mod your weapons? I tried both work benches and didn't see any options

The only good weapon I have found is the sniper rifle - everything else hits for ridiculously tiny damages (20 or under). Explored a crap ton of places and never uncovered anything decent aside from "That Gun", but even it is fairly shoddy. My fists with Spiked Knuckles do nearly 50 damage and can do full damage against most armored foes - mean while my Assault Carbine does a measly 16 at full condition.

The antimateriel rifle is like a more powerful sniper rifle. Really liked it. That's the one recommendation I can give without referring to any quests. There are some good ones.

There was a new patch a couple of days ago but it didn't address a lot of the issues I'm aware of. There are so many bugs that they're not waiting to issue one fix-all patch. The bug lists that I've skimmed didn't even mention many of the worse ones that I've experienced and know others have as well.

I didn't get any companion bugs that made progress impossible, but there were some big ones with...

You do it on your pipboy. Highlight a weapon and there should be an option to modify it, if you have mods that go with it in you inventory.

Once I got that sniper guy as a companion, it was like playing on easy mode for the next 15 levels, he'd kill stuff before I could even aim half the time.

I found quite a few named guns, a few early on that were really overpowered for quite a few levels, could one shot kill almost anything if I got close enough. But yeah the sniper rifle was pretty great once I got it. The assault carbide was quite good as well.

I did find a light machine gun as well, and that was awesome, 260dps or something.

Another sniper type weapon, the Gauss rifle was one of my favorites in F3, but I didn't get a chance to use it much in NV. It knocks the enemy on his behind.

Oh yes the gauss rifle, I didn't find it in New Vegas until I was replaying the end part a specific way. THAT is an awesome weapon.

I can't figure out how to get the Anti-material rifle. According to everything I've read, I should be able to buy it from a specific vendor, but it's never available.

For getting companions back (except ED-E):

Some weapons only become available after you've advanced to a certain level, I think. At least that's the impression I got.

By the way, looking at the wiki, the anti-materiel (sic) rifle requires a strength of 8 and gun skill of 100 to use with optimal performance.

So I just picked up Fallout 3 in the bargain bin after hearing that it was this awesome gaming experience.

I don't get what people see in this franchise. Where is the best place to trade in games?

Freedom and sandbox style probably.

That is what drew me in, along with the gushing reviews over the past 2 years. The combat system is so clunky, and the game really doesn't teach you how to play it as you go. It just kind of feels like you are thrust into this world with no direction. A good example is when you get to the lockpicking mini game and the description for it couldn't be more vague.

They tried to combine RPG, FPS, and third person sandbox into a single game...and it just doesn't seem to work IMO.

I am sorry. Here let me help you out. I have a game that will be right up your alley.

That should be at about your difficulty level! =D

Fallout 3 has a lot of design flaws in it. I didn't enjoy that game all that much. World just felt empty and extremely boring.

New Vegas on the other hand fixed a lot of the game play issues - added humor back into the mix and created a coherent and understandable storyline. If you're still curious about a free-roaming FPS/RPG with a great backdrop, this game is the bomb - despite the ridiculous amount of bugs in it. No other game compares.

BTW... when did this board get so many Trolls? Seriously, mocking someone over a video game?

I bought the game on launch day and have played a grand total of 8 minutes of it. That is more to do with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Halo: Reach, and Dead Rising 2, but did they patch the game yet for all the bugs?
