Like every super hero movie that comes out, I'll watch it regardless of whether or not it sucks. If I can sit through Daredevil and Elecktra, I can sit through this.
I honestly didn't have any expectations for the movie once I heard Ryan Reynolds was cast.. but from the trailer it seems they might actually stick to some modern arcs instead of the golden age.. perhaps using the new secret origins over the original. Which will make the story a lot deeper. I also like the foreshadowing on this poster.. that ain't Hal Jordan on top of the mountain..
I like that all of the attention is on Hal Jordan, that gives Sinestro a chance to steal the show..
Also if you look closely when Carol Ferris is flying the jet there is a Star Sapphire emblem on her helmet.. a little more foreshadowing perhaps?

I find that there are two types of comic book action movies. The popcorn variety and the dark serious ones.
The dark serious comic book movie is relevantly new but most have done a good job with it. Sin City and Dark Knight are probably the two best examples. The Spirit was bad and the Watchmen as ok at best.
The popcorn action flick is much more common and are usually worse movies. The first Iron Man is probably the best example of a good popcorn comic book movie. There are lots of bad examples, X-Men, Spiderman, Dare Devil, Transformers and many others I have forgotten. Most of these movies have bad everything expect action sequences. Green Lantern looks to be one of these movies.
Gotta agree with OotC on this one. Some of these comic characters just don't translate well to the big screen. And I think he hit the nail onthe head by selecting Thor and GL as examples. I just don't see a big movie pulling off the GL story. The movie might do a good job of appealing to core fans if it's done well - but I can't see it having a wide appeal like some of the other super heroes who have received movie treatment in the past.
Forgive me for being unfamiliar with the comic, but that set-up is pretty ######ed. It's like comic book movies have used all their good/interesting source material and are now resorting to the dumb, more comic-book like stuff.
"Cocky fighter jet pilot gets recruited by aliens to a group of universe defenders that wear green suits and rings that give them god-like powers!"
"Norse god gets exiled to earth and must prove his worth by defeating evil with his giant lightning hammer!"
Yeah, it works in a comic book world, but this looks horrendously cheesy presented as a serious, big budget movie. Add in that the effects were awful, and it tried way too hard to be funny, didn't explain anything that was actually going on... yeah, my expectations are pretty low for this one.
How are those origins any more stupid and silly than:
"Alien super powered space baby from exploding planet comes to earth to save us from bald headed real estate tycoon"
"Nerdy geek gets bitten by radioactive spider and gains the proportional strength of a spider overnight and the ability to shoot webbing from his wrists to save us from evil billionaire in bad Halloween costume with exploding pumpkins"
"Rich boy sees his parents murdered and declares revenge. Decides to travel the world to train with ninjas and then dress up like a bat with his underwear on the outside to beat up criminals with expensive toys and a hoarse voice"

The only reason those seem more plausible is that we grew up with them. Anyone who has grown up on Green Lantern, besides being a poor unfortunate soul, would think that it is a totally plausible origin.

Because you have to try and make those universally appealing characters sound bad. You don't have to try to make Thor and Green Lantern sound bad.
I don't put much stock in trailers... unless they are totally awesome... but I agree that the CGI will be polished off. It is really bad in this trailer. Distractingly bad.

It's just perspective.
Green Lantern is harder science fiction/fantasy than most superheroes. OA is an ancient capital planet at the center of a very advanced and ancient galaxy spanning civilization and they send out rings to create guardians to police the fringes of their space. That's just like the Old Republic and Jedis going out to be "knights" or whatever.
Thor is classical mythology that collides with our modern world. The theme has always been a thing where the ancient pantheons of mythology (greek/norse) have always existed on another plane but have been forgotten by humans but they are still there. These themes exist in very serious and classic literature.
I find them both much more believable than Batman or Superman or Spider-Man or all the other Superheros whose origins come from science experiments, gamma rays, cosmic rays, super serums, etc.
I do believe they've royally screwed up Thor and Green Lantern though, as these are two franchises where you can really go over the top in portraying Asgard and OA but instead they've been turned into low budget cheesy sets with rubber and CG suits and bad CG landscapes
