Isn't religion fun?

Christ is just greek for the Hebrew word Messiah. It's a title, not a name. Not dissimilar to saying "Mayor Nenshi", for example, or "President Obama."

Times change - people change, but that doesn't mean the bible can't be used to help guide, not enforce, a set of moral beliefs.

Yet huge numbers of our planet believe in literal word of god in holy books.
So what would the bible guide on moral beliefs?

A blanket statement just like all religious people hate gays.
But while we are on this issue, the vast majority of Atheists do charts like this or debate this stuff because a shockingly large number of people believe in the literal word of God from the Bible and other holy books.
This literal belief effects not only government but how important laws and such things are decided upon.
From gay rights, to condom use in Africa, its faith without reason which fights against those things, if you are blind to see the overwhelming intolerance of the catholic church, and Islam in regards to condom use and in the case of Islam, science, then you are certainly doing right by pointing out those crazy atheists and their loud mouths

That's a pretty misinformed post - the Catholic faith does not hold a literal belief in the stuff in the bible, not at all. The Church's position on condom use is very clearly thought out and explained, whether you choose to agree with it or not. Don't confuse the certainty of their conviction with intolerance - they have a position and they stick to it. But there's also a great deal of theology and rationality attached to it, not just a literal adherence to what's written in the bible.

The problem is that these so called "new atheists" have become just as annoying as any religious zealot out there. The characteristics of an annoying Christian, Mormon, or JW are just as apparent now in atheists- overbearing, intolerant of other ideas, preachy. Are you guys going to start knocking on doors and handing out tracks at malls??? Hey, don't get me wrong, believe and say whatever you want. I just find it very ironic that many non-believers no longer want to be labelled as an atheist because of the direction that "new atheism" has taken things.

Has anyone in this thread acted preachy and annoying?
Seems like you're being a little sensitive. It's just people commenting on an interesting graphical interpretation of the bible's contradictions.
No one's saying "leave your faith now that you've seen this chart!!, that ends the debate!!"
If your faith is strong enough, the mild comments in this thread shouldn't offend you.

You honestly believe there is nothing positive or moral that you could take from the bible? Serious? My neighbour has a hot wife so I don't like one of the commandments but there are at least a couple good uns in there.

I am not offended, nor do I have a faith to feed any offense- My post is a general comment towards the increasing trend of atheism becoming preachy and aggressive- which is what I think inspired this graph, and inspires many of the religion threads on CP.
I have chosen not to practice any religion, and I could care less if someone else does or does not. My contention is simply that many atheists have become increasingly dogmatic and preachy in recent years.

He says that many non-believers, I count myself in that group, distance themselves from the rest of this batch of newly empowered atheists because the lot of them are so smug and embarrassing to be associated with.
Also, Harris's new book is a total bomb. Finally people with philosophical and theological training are taking these guys to task for their entire lack of self-regard.

The pendulum is starting to swing the other way, and does so without the pervasive organization of the North American Christian community.
Largely, it's individuals becoming empowered by expressing their own convictions and finding commonality with others. Roots up rather than top-down doctrine.
That peter12 and you are so distressed by the turn of events gladdens me immensely.

But you see it's really not, the pendulum is really not going anywhere. What we have now is the rehashing of 200 year old ideas, mainly liberal utilitarianism, by far less intelligent and eloquent people. It's embarrassing and shrill.

The Christian "religion" is basically a pastiche of assorted myths adapted from other creeds cobbled together centuries after the fact.

I'll take 200 year old ideas over 2,000 year old ideas.

Whatever the case, atheists will never rid the world of religion- which is precisely why the "unholy war" against Christianity, Islam and so forth is an impossible idea. While Atheists may continue to "convert" people with science and reason, preachers and pastors will continue to do the same with scripture, emotion, and community.
The religious have never really based their beliefs on science and reason, which is why putting together fancy graphs that attempt to discredit scripture with logic is useless- fine if it is meant to be a rallying tool for like minded non-believers. To expect it to spark the revelation in a Christian of a godless universe is silly.

I think this is an important post Peter. I work with one of the kindest, honest and good people you'd ever meet - but he honestly believes without a shadow of a doubt that Noah built an ark with two of each animal and that all life originated from God creating Adam and Eve. Seeing his faith ripped apart by two atheist co-workers for no other reason to flex their intellectual muscles was absolutely depressing.
If a good Christian upbringing made this man the way he is what right do these guys have to try and rip down the foundation his morals/ethics are built on? They might as well be going door to door handing out leaflets.

They don't need too, as the worlds population gets more educated IQ levels will continue to rise.
Ask any genius level person if they "believe" and most certainly your question would be insulting their intelligence.
The higher the IQ the less chance you believe in fairytales!
