That's a suburban myth There are plenty of schools near the downtown core for all ages. Many are top ranked in the province.

On the culinary note, there are a few good restaurants in Cochrane, namely the Blue Dog Cafe and the Salt & Pepper Mexican place right beside it. I've heard that the Omega place is pretty good, and they've now got two pretty nice Vietnamese places as well.

StatsCan shows no data on it. Too bad. That would be interesting to see.

Bump
Thinking about moving from High River to Cochrane, due to a possible change in employment in NW Calgary (curently working in SE Calgary, hence the High River location).
So I already love the small town atmosphere, fine with nothing being open late or on Sundays. We have two small children and love to be out in the mountains.
Any recommendations on neighborhoods or anything else that may be useful for us to help us make the right decision on moving.

Thanks

It's extra 15-20 minutes per trip from Tuscany to Cochrane. Might not seem like much but double that for a round trip and do it every day might be a different thing.

Sure. If you're doing it every day. Entirely depends on your situation. I wouldn't want to live in Chaparral and work in Crowfoot either.

If you're working in the NW, want to be closer to the mountains, and wants a smaller town to raise kids, as the poster who bumped the thread, Cochrane isn't a bad option, IMO.

Salt and Pepper closed and moved to Inglewood now. Got a good indian place there now though, guys there now, used to own raj doot downtown before it changed IIRC.

One thing, if you're moving out there because of cheap lot prices, you need to take into account your increased vehicle costs. I used to live in the far north and then moved downtown(i don't work downtown) and i look at my old fuel bills for the month and my eyes go Yeah i drive a gas guzzling truck. but the difference between my gas bills from 2 years ago and now nearly cover my rent, and thats excluding wear and tear on my vehicle from those extra kms.

Airdrie feels like a small town, just more red neck - reminds me of any small northern Albertan town. Cochrane feels like a small town that is a small town, with the smattering of yuppies that Airdrie doesn't have.

Seriously, I don't get how the 'vibe' in Cochrane can be too small town for someone from Airdrie, my head is esploding.

I would way rather live in Airdrie than say...Radway, Boyle, Lac La Biche, Conklin...gross.

Cochrane isn't really that big. I'd say Airdrie is a city though.

Airdrie I think is. Cochrane is still classified as a town.

Airdrie - 29,000 people

Cochrane - 15,000 people

So while Cochrane is about half the size of Airdrie, I don't get how the feel can be that different - but to each his own.

On a side note, Cochrane was apparently incorporated as a town in 1971 and remains so, even with a population of 15,000. However, the Alberta Municipal Government Act (AMGA) classifies a city as having a population over 10,000 - So why isn't Cochrane a city yet? it's 50% bigger than the threshold for incorporation as 'the City of Cochrane'.

I imagine, much to the original argument's point, that the 'town' is trying to maintain it's small size and feel.
