While I must congratulate the flames scouting staff on finding a great diamond in the rough in Patrick Holland who is ligting it up this year, I have to seriously question why they favoured bloodlines so much in last year's draft.
The Flames focused entirely on the WHL, which is going to come back and bit them hard. Buffalo looks to have found another great player in Steven Shipely a great young power forward who is a leader on a very young Niagra Ice Dogs squad and has goen from a Nemisz clone last year, to a big man with very good skating and explosiveness after a summer of hard work.

Cameron is going to take some time to adjust to the AHL due to his smaller size. PAtterson is bigger and therefore better able to adjust his game to the AHL style. I bet that by the end of the year their point totals are similar or Cameron has a few more.

Just because they took mostly WHL players does not mean they focused entirely on the WHL to the detriment of other leagues. Switch the draft order up and we might have ended up with mostly OHLers. I'm not sure why you assume they favour bloodlines either, perhaps they just happened to like those kids quite a bit? I don't think they went into the draft trying to accumulate sons of former NHLers.
You can't read as much into scouting trends as you are trying to.

I agree look at the other draft, Erixon, Bjorklund, Ortio.

The Ohl has been one of the more effective producers of top end talent in recent years. Out of the last 3 years, not only has it dominated at the draft table, but it has produced 8/9 of the top 3 players drafted.
In those years, the flames have drafted exactly one player from the OHL. That tells me, they aren't doing a great job of scouting that league.

To clarify, top end talent in terms of a lottery pick which the Flames have not had.
Afterwards the players are from all over the place.

Fantastic, a whole 100% increase in their competence!
When you think about it though, that was probably the best pick they might have made in the last 3 years (though Ryan Howse certainly has some potential)
Really though, when you draft 9 ( 10 if you count Bennet) of 19 players from the WHL, it shows you have a preference for the league.
I wouldn't mind that if it was a better league in terms of developping NHL players, but it isn't.
In the 2010 draft 16 of the top 60 picks came from the OHL. Conversely, 13 were WHL players.
In 2009 12 of the top 60 were OHLers while 8 were from the WHL.
2008 16 of 60 from the OHL and 13 from the WHL.
Lets focus on 2008, combined the OHL draft picks are averaging 52.5 NHL games, while WHL guys are lagging behind at 23.3.
The OHL has 4 Players who have already played more than 100 NHL games, the WHL has only 1.
Let's take a look at 2007. 14 of the top 60 are OHLers while the WHL has 13 draftees. However, the OHL is the only league to have produced two players from the top 60 to have played over 200 games. Hell even the Q fard better than the WHL producing two guys to have played over 150 seasons to the WHL's zero.
To drive this home, the number of players drafted out side of the top 60 having played over a hundred NHL games since 2006: - OHL: 2 (Steve Mason, Cal Clutterbuck)
- WHL: 1 (Derek Dorsett)
The OHL is producing better players at a higher rate in recent years and the Flames should be making an effort to take advantage of it.

Yep, and we also signed Christopher Breen, Bryan Cameron and Ryan Wilson out of the OHL in the last three years.
Last three years:
WHL - 9 Drafted (10 if you include Bennett who was drafted out of the BCHL)
OHL - 2 Drafted - 3 Signed As UFA's
Europe - 4 Drafted
USHL/NCAA - 3 Drafted

It's commendable that they've done a good job of trying to grab free agents from the OHL. I am sure they were in the mix for Jacob Muzzin who is now playing for LA.

This number is highly misleading though. Remove the top 3 players from each year (Which the Flames have no access to anyways), and the numbers are about even, meaning players come from all over and that it could easily be coincidence that they're from the WHL

At that point might as well drop the top 20 players as well since the Flames haven't had access to those either. The fact that the OHL has produced the top pick in the draft for the last 4 drafts is not just coincidence.

Mind doing that then (or even possibly the top 10)? That actually would provide better numbers for the situation the Flames were seeing when they drafted.

Another win for Ortio. Seems like good performance with 40 saves, 1 allowed goal and game's second star.
