Was Woodwards downtown? I thought they just had the Chinook location in Calgary?

An old memory that just pop'ed into my head, was Woolco at Northland Mall (NW Calgary) hit by lighting around 1990? I grew up around there are vaguely remember something like that and they were selling crap outside.

I dont remember Woodwards being in downtown Calgary, but they had a fantastic one in downtown Vancouver. There was also a Woodwards in Sunridge mall.

Wal Mart did not buy Woolco. They simply moved into their abandoned stores after Woolco went under.

My mother worked for Woodwards. It was the end all and be all in our family. She shopped there every Friday in the Vancouver store and later the New Westminster store. I'm sure it was a blow to her when it went under. I often shopped at the Sunridge Mall one but the retail business changed with the cheap products coming out of Asia and American competition.

No Woodward's for sure at Chinook mall. Someone else mentioned they had an outlet in Sunridge, I never knew that.

Didn't the roof cave in at the store and that's why they set up shop outside (or closed the store altogether?).....seems like forever ago. Granted I was only 5 at that point so my memory might be failing me.

Did a search and according to wikipedia, they had 3 locations in calgary, chinook, sunridge and market mall.
  • (Chinook Centre) 1960—currently The Bay (was the first Calgary store - 1960)
  • (Market Mall) 1970—currently Zellers & additional mall retail space
  • (Sunridge Mall) 1981—currently Zellers & additional mall retail space

Yeah, something like that. I was 4 years old at that time. I vaguely remember something about lightning?

The toy section in that catalogue was freaking epic. I remember flipping through it every year near Christmas. I still remember they had awesome layouts, like Transformers, Voltron, Thunder Cats, Ghostbusters, and TMNT. Ah, the memories.

I remember both Woodwards at Market Mall, and Woolco at Northland Mall.

Woodwards was huge and sat empty for a good while before the expanded the mall a bit and the sportchek took some space and zellers took the rest I believe. Then the massive expansion changed the entire look of that end... I feel like Kmart or something was there for a short period before Zellers tho, hmmm...

Where was that Bonkers kids play area? Because I am pretty sure they took over an old mini-department store area that I would have thought was an old Woolco....

What about K-mart. I don't think there is a single Canadian location left is there?

Really I get why department stores suffer - whenever I go into The Bay, or Sears - each department is a complete mess, understaffed and even when you want to go pay for something - it's very difficult to find someone that will actually take your cash.

The model doesn't work anymore.

That being said I would love to get my eat on at a Woolco cafeteria.
