I wonder whether Higgins entering the race was the killer for McIvor. I would say they cannabilized each other's supporters far more than Nenshi's - in a 2 person race, McIvor's organization and lead might have been insurmountable.

As a Calgarian who lives in Van, I love this.
People there don't realize the diversity that Calgary has, despite and including a solid conservative base. it's painted as far more redneck than reality.
We need Sam Sullivan back as Mayor in Vancouver.
Then Western Canada's 2 largest cities would represent handicaps, gays, muslims, minorities, whites, browns, curly haired, straight haired. Everyone but women!

I think the bridge is symbolic. When going door knocking the other guys can just say peace bridge rather than explain all of the disfuction. It provided a quick attack point on mail outs and an effective campaign tool.
Urqhart part of the same disfuctional council swept her riding, along with Hodges, Stevensen, Jones, Chabot.
Lowe missing the vote is also being re-elected.
So with Mar being close to losing as well I say peace bridge was a big factor in this election.
Incumbants don't lose in city politics.
