Well if we're going for symbols, maybe you'll be buried under a billboard for feminine hygene products.

I think a lot of dead Jewish people would disagree. As would Muslims. Etc.

Maybe christians need to stop being so anal about slapping crosses on everything.

Sort of self-evident, don't you think? This sort of atheism is more like arguing with your parents than having an independent philosophical perspective.

The cross is a wonderful symbol. The intent and meaning is one of immense sacrifice and revolution.

Jeez man. I'm just saying that the crosses are there as a reminder of someone that died (assumably on duty?). Nobody's forcing religion on anyone. It's just a symbolic reminder of a dead person.

Do you get this annoyed by the jesus fish on the back of cars, or is that ok because it's private property?

Normally I enjoy your posts Peter even though I disagree with you normally but this time I think your post was beneath you.

Why? Because some atheists believe you shouldn't tell fairy tales to children, and raise them to believe in ideas for which there is no evidence?

Rational critical thought is often at odds with religious proclamation. I prefer the former to the latter, and in public society my government shouldn't be endorsing religious doctrine.

I suppose that's pretty black and white. Takes a bigger mental leap than sitting the pews accepting everything that's said. Hard to believe it's narrow minded.

My point is that gestures and actions like the atheist group mentioned only deserve derision and disrespect. This sort of behaviour is childish and petulant, it's unable to be reasoned with.

Where does this have anything to do with any religion or faith. As mentioned, these were privately funded memorials, they used the Cross as a marker or symbol in this case not as a religious symbol. The ground was probably not consecrated.

Its pretty much acknowledged that Crosses are usually used as burial markers.

These weren't Christians slapping crosses on everything. These were people putting up a memorial to the police.

It has nothing to do with any organized religion. These atheists were being petty.

Private property and quite small. No issue there for me.

These crosses were unavoidable.

Quote:
the appeals court made several arguments, such as the large size and location of the crosses -- on busy public highways where motorists cannot help but notice. Other similar memorial crosses have been erected on public land such as Arlington National Cemetery to honor fallen war dead. But the judges noted those markers are generally accessible or visible only to those who expressly choose to visit them, unlike roads where citizens cannot help but see them.

You completely ignore the point that a lot of people see the cross as memorial symbol, and not as a religious symbol.

There's religious imagery all over Canada's great memorials to our war sacrifices. When is Flashpoint and his atheist tea club group going to go after them. First the highways, next the Vimy memorial!

As much as you like it (I believe) I hate it just as much, and it is on public land therfore I feel that it is wrong.

Looks like a stalemate to me.

Well if you have such a problem with a religious annotation being seen on a daily basis, I suggest moving somewhere else because every time you touch American money it says 'God' on it.

Flying spaghetti monster forbid we put an easily identifiable symbol in a place where a public servant was killed. These people need to get a life, theres bigger issues in society worth fighting for.

Many flags in the Western World have crosses on them. Most of us have forgotten or ignore the reference.

Next thing they're going to go after?

Arlington Northwest Memorial in Olympia, Washington.

Can't wait to see how that goes over. Nothing like desecrating on the memorial site to remember the brave men and women that helped defend their great nation.
