Honestly though, people talk about what will happen, and who will be at fault if there's a collision in this situation, but how often is there ever going to be a collision in this situation?
It's a lot different scenario if someone is going straight through without a stop sign or red light in their direction and someone turns across their path. In that situation, the driver who doesn't have to stop has no intention of stopping and no reason to believe anything will enter his path, plus he's traveling at speed.
In the 2-way Stop scenario, both drivers are stopped, so no one should be entering the intersection at speed and should easily be able to brake to avoid any potential collision.
The worst thing that should happen in this situation is the person turns in front of the driver who's going straight, and one lays on his horn while the other one flips him off.
If both drivers are paying attention, there shouldn't be a collision. No matter how big an idiot you think the other guy is, you're not going to hit him just to prove a point.

Exactly. If it was an issue, there would be something in the Driver's handbook and/or law about it - specifically - in Alberta.

I love the anarchy and lawlessness of the controlled 2 way in Alberta.

Don't even get me started on the uncontrolled 3 ways in Alberta. I was instructed and shown by my teacher on how to navigate them properly, and then was informed by my driving instructer after my exam that I almost failed because I was manuevering them completely wrong.

I just close my eyes, lift my hands up, and let god take the wheel. Works everytime, non-believers.

Oh, right, didn't read close enough. Thought guy turning left was on the main road, while he was trying to cross it.
Without reading replies, I say left yields to straight if arrive at roughly same time. Otherwise first come, first serve.

Well now, ahem, clearly the straight through traffic has the right of way, turning left yields to straight through. Not first come, first to go. ??
As for missing your turn waiting for the straight through traffic, (it's the same as a 4way stop) you can't miss your turn because your already there stopped at the crosswalk ready to go. If you miss your turn, shame on you.
If you want to get bullish when turning left, you can jump into the intersection when the only through traffic comes on the otherside (as they pass) This gives you a head start and the right of way as the through traffic must yield to any traffic in the intersection.

Now, I am very much on the side of those who say the driver going straight has right away if both vehicles are stopped. I do realize that the argument for the other side stems from the lack of clarification in any legal documentation. The fuzzy area is a lack of definition of who has the right away at a 2 way stop intersection.
The way I see it is that if there is no clear definition of right of way between the 2 vehicles that are stopped, then one would revert to the next clear rule in that situation. That rule being that the left turner should only proceed with their turn when safe to do so. If right of way is in question then it is not safe to proceed with the left turn. Since nothing documents the correct timing of going straight, then the straight through driver gets right of way.
That's just my two cents.
