Default ipod before social skills/safety

Lately everywhere I go I seem to run into ipod situations....
-ipod dog walkers : almost ride (bike) right over them, as they walk with their heads down
-ipod drivers : not sure why with all the technology but they are out there...
-ipod shoppers : bumping around oblivious to the outside world
-ipod kid : "in the back seat" "with their arms folded tight" "Win Butler"
-ipod racer : why even show up to a public race? If you didn't are you sure anyone would miss you? Just go for a long run/bike on your own on an open stretch I am sure you will get the same effect. I have done a few tri's this year and it is great that they don't allow ipods...
-ipod dad/parent : On holidays and then recently at the Heritage Day/Princess Island event. Why be around your family with your ipod on? Time to tune in...guess the ipod kids need to learn somewhere....even this situation is beyond one ear bud in....any stats out there on ipod related deaths or injuries.....correlations between being plugged in and diminishing social skills?..any good books on this topic? Based on my experiences I am interested....Cool story bro I know....but you could always skip to the end or shuffle

Couldn't agree more actually. All the young people where I work can't seem to function if they don't have the latest Lady Gaga track playing in their ear. Its a weird effect to, you can tell they are tuned out of their surroundings and kinda look like mindless zombies wandering around in some sort of autistic world.

People drive while listening to their iPod...as in with ear/headphones? That's insane.

I always see people with headphones in their ears and think the same thing. Why not just get an Aux In, or FM adapter or something..

I sometimes have my iPhone ear buds while driving in if I'm expecting a call because it has a microphone for handsfree calls. No music though.

Though I don't know if it's too different from having yout music cranked really loud. Either way you cant hear anything else around you.

The kids with the Nintendo DS in front of their faces at restaurants annoys me. Have one dinner as a family without a screen in your face.

If you are not part of that family you don't have enough information to say something like that. Sometimes some down time where each person does their own thing while waiting for dinner is not a bad thing. Just like I need my down time after a hard days work my daughter needs it too.

Downtime = playing a game sitting in a restaurant?

That kid will just become one of those people who sit among friends at a table, only to stare at their cell phone in an awkward silence.

There is usually a time and place for certain things. Playing a game and ignoring others in your immediate surrounding is not nor should it be accepted by parents as socially acceptable behavior.

I agree, I love new technology but jeez, do we have to use it all the time ?

I don't even carry my cell around much, so therefore I don't give the # out, so therefore I don't have to carry it around much. LoL

I hope your daughter is not a kid. If she needs downtime from being a kid, something is wrong with that.

Going out for dinner as a family was a fun, special thing for me/us as a kid

Whats the difference between having ear buds in, or having it on the stereo? Is it really 'insane' ?

The ability to hear the outside world is the difference I'd imagine.

I saw a guy shopping with his headphones in recently. Seriously, how cut off do we need to be from each other? I can already go shopping wihout even talking to a single person. It's kind of sad.

I used to go to a gas station purposley because it didn't have the pay at the pump feature. I became pretty good friends wih the teller because he was always there when I went in. It was nice to talk to someone. Now hey closed that station and he next closest one has a pay T the pump and a d bag behind the counter. Maybe I'm a little weird that way that I actually like to talk to people.

The other thing that drives me nuts is cell phone ettiquite. 2 people sitting at a table texting. Honestly get off the phone. Is talking to the person across from you really that painful?

I think I got off topic there. I love technology as much as the next person. But were only getting more cut off from each other which isn't good.

Yep, as others have said, it happens a lot.

We've noticed that many of the fools we figure are texting, due to observing poor driving, are actually listening - or in some cases watching - their iPod.

Or the girl in front of you leaning over and texting the whole Flames game. Way to support the team.

For sure, don't get me wrong, I frikkin love my iPhone. I actually don't know what I would do without it after having one for 2 years. Wikipedia mobile is the ultimate 'wrong prover'. Probably win half a dozen coffees a month settling dumb bets with it. But at work, I go to work, and be focused for the 8 hours i am there. Might check my bank balance, or read the Herald on it while I am taking a deuce or something, but other than that, I put it on mute. Even having a radio playing in the background will slow my productivity as I am working with numbers all day, and can't afford to make mistakes. I just don't know how people can be truly productive with a distraction like that. Even worse, I don't know how someone can carry a frikkin conversation with you while they are listening to it.... which some people apparantly can.

They're practicing driving without sound because they know their ears won't last long.

I, for one, very much appreciate when kids play their Nintendo DS' or PSP's at restaurants instead of speaking (and/or crying/screaming/fidgetting/stairing at me through the seats), and I commend their parents.

i hear what you are saying; however, sometimes it is the easiest thing to do to keep the kids occupied and quiet while waiting for the meal. it can also allow the parents some time to chat while the kids are occupied. i also note that in my kids case we do not allow them any time on the DS from bedtime sunday night until after school is over on friday - so in some ways going out for dinner can cut into thier DS time.

i was in the mall in Red Deer a few days ago and saw some local rube wandering in the mall with his country music blaring from his iPod and he was not wearing headphones - sort of like how one would tote a "ghetto blaster" back in tha day....i found this local "radio rahim" entertaining.....

That would be really annoying, unless he had it slung over his shoulder in an ironic ghetto blaster type way.
