Default Webcams around my property

Our neighbourhood has been having trouble the last few months with a couple kids in the area (car break ins, bonfires in the woods, green bin thefts/destruction, etc...) and I was thinking about setting up a few webcams around my property in the event they try to target me. How hard would it be to set a few of them up? Is it possible to have them record so that in the event something happened I could go back and review them?

I'm afraid I don't know much about that but I am curious which community if you don't mind me asking.

I saw some in Home Depot that recorded to a "PVR" that used SD cards. I didn't pay attention to the price; I was too busy admiring that handsome fellow on the monitor.

There are lots of "security" webcams with programs available. TBH though, it won't help you much as what do you do with the video? I own a store, and when I suspect someone shoplifts I look at the video. It's not really all that useful unless you know who it is...

My only concern is what sort of information you'll gain even if you do catch them on camera?

"Aha! It was that dark figure with the skin and the hair and clothes!"

Assuming these 'kids' are vandalizing stuff at street distance, even IR lights arn't going to be effective in getting a better picture.

Spend the money on a big motion-sensing floodlamp.

I'm going to add something like these ones when I get finished my renos
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...4442_N247-1058

$500 or so for 8 cameras viewable on your iPhone, or streamed on the web. 500 GB DVR included. I don't know about the quality, but they may deter some people.

Lots of people in the neighborhood I live in (outside Halifax) know who it is and the RCMP are well aware of the individual. So it's just a matter of catching them on camera.

FWIW, he lives 2 houses down the road from me.

Well, yesterday morning at 6:00am I had the dogs out for their walk and was going through the woods. I was coming up to a bend in the trail and as 2 young males came around the bend and saw me they bolted about 60 feet back into the heavy brush. When I got up to the I asked what the hell they were doing and they told me they were smoking weed. Since I couldn't smell it I didn't believe them. I walked about 200 feet up the trail and waited for them to come back out. They slowly crept out and when they saw me jumped back into the brush. I continued about 5 minutes up the trail and then turned around. I was able to see them from behind from several hundred feet back before they went up a side trail. I also tried to go up that way to get a better look at them but didn't see them so I walked back and forth on the section of trail for a bit but figured they were gone. I went home and called the RCMP who came and as they were stopped at the trail head a few people were stopping saying their car or shed was broken into so the K9 unit was called in. The K9 tracked 3 youths to the rear of a property where they were arrested and charged with various offenses.

Hopefully this is the end of the rash of car break ins, green bin vandalism, and fires in the woods. But I also suspect I will now be a target since I believe they are local teens and would obviously recognize me and the dogs and know where I live since I believe one of them lives 2 doors down from me.

Well done, any idea on what the charges were? Getting pinned for theft, vandalism, arson is a lot different than possession.

If you're at all concerned about retaliation (which I would doubt as now these sh1ts are scared of getting caught again). I'd install some good motion sensing floodlamps. They know who you are, and you know who they are. They will want to avoid being recognized, giant floodlamps will help for this.

Not sure yet, the RCMP said they'd call me back in a few days. I ran into a neighbour on my walk this morning and someone from further up the road was stopped talking to them and they had broken into his garage and stole a 12 ga shotgun and a chain saw. I know they also got beer and a weed trimmer from someone else. I don't know what they got from other people though. I also wouldn't be too surprised if they had drugs of some sort on them. I'll see if I can find out all the charges when I talk to the authorities again.

I don't share my pizza so that's not going to work very well.

What the hell... well your neighbor must be an idiot for not securing it properly. That changes everything man. Be careful.
