What percentage of sales do solo double cheeseburgers form? There is a reason why the double cheeseburger costs 1.69 and the quarter pounder costs twice that despite the fact they have virtually the same ingredients.
I'm sorry, but you're totally wrong. A dbl cheeseburger uses regular patties and the Quarterpounder uses a bigger patty. The bread is different. Onions are different.
Everything about the burger is different except they both have mustard and ketchup.
The meat they use for the dbl cheeseburger probably costs them about 15 cents a patty. I'd say the profit from a dbl cheeseburger is atleast one dollar.

You think that's tough? I reiterate my assertion that you have no horticultural experience.
It's not a tough process but it can be very difficult to perfect the process so you actually get good weed out of it. A lot of growers will skip steps or cut them short to save time but its crap to smoke.
I think the government could set up a big enough buildings somewhere that they could make it worth their while and still keep prices at least at what they are now or lower. My biggest beef with making it legal is how good it will be if the government is growing it.

We have a network of professional, reputable growers to supply our ever-growing client list. If you would like to have one of our growers grow legally for you, please apply and we'll match you with a grower.

It is relatively time consuming as each plant requires individual care. It's not like a field of wheat (not that I am saying growing wheat is easy).
Anyways this discussion is getting really tiresome. You seem to be stuck on this idea that weed will be grown on large communal farms and the government will willingly choose to tax as little as possible so you and your friends can get high for cheap....good luck with that.

I'm impressed with your attention to detail, but I still assert they are very similar ingredients, just cut into different sized pieces.
Curing tobbacco is an involved process in small batches. Its quite a bit different from trimming buds and bagging them.
Not only that, a lot of the present work needed to process tobacco can be done mechanically. Not a chance they can design a machine capable of maintaining or harvesting Cannibus.
It's got to be good for medical, experienced growers have govt. contracts now. Man
Medical use would be completely different than what someone would buy from the liquor store (or whereever they sell it).

Actually it's not, its because of my last name I get called Hoot because no one can ever pronounce it correctly and it just stuck. But I guess it works for both ways.
I lived in Calgary for almost 5 years and I made sure to pick up everytime I came home to Victoria. I know how lucky I am out here and even saw it on the faces of people I was toking with when I was out for Stampede, it was like they were just hit in the face with a brick.

I dont see how this is a better solution than legalizing.
That's like being legal to possess it but illegal to grow or obtain it.
Doesn't make any sense.
I agree. All decriminilization really does is create a grey zone in the law.
I don't see any problems with legalizing it, personally. Based on what I have seen from the pharmaceutical, tobacco, and liquor industries, I just don't see any savings being passed on to the consumer.

This. I am certainly not speaking from first hand experience (had some friends when I was young..enough said) but you're totally right. Everybody and their cat can grow bad weed, that is very easy. But to grow a very high quality strain that fully lives up to its potential, from my understanding, is almost an art form.

I implore you to read that paper in it's entirety.
Alcohol in BC is taxed at I believe 60 percent. in the Rand study, the 50 dollar excise tax can account for over that amount. On top of that, they also apply a sales tax of 3.5 percent onto the wholesale price as well.
To me, knowing the diverse cross section of society that I do, find it completely unfathomable to think that if marijuana were legalized, it would somehow be more expensive than it is, and that people wouldn't readily consume it at that price.
Of course, not everything is created equal. Some homebrew beers are worse than others, while microbreweries have really carved out their own, distinct market.

I've read it. I've also read many university level text books on economics. The logic in the report is extremely simplistic and they ignore comparable examples such as alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceuticals.
If government stepped out of the process, then yes the market could make it cheaper. However, I just don't see government stepping out of the process. Nor do I see them self-limiting their taxation. You obviously have some rose-coloured view of government that I do not share and you've obviously never ran your own business or worked closely with someone who is.
There are more factors here than a simplistic supply and demand model.

I don't get why the Government would charge more money for the same product and think people will pay it. They charge ~$10/pack for cigs and you can bet your ass that a smoker would gladly pay $5/pack for better cigarettes with minimal risk (which is exactly what it is to buy weed) of doing so, why wouldn't it be the same for weed if the government was overcharging?
Really I'm not worried about price at this point, I'm more concerned with the quality of the product if the government gets their hand on it. Also I don't see the government ever legalizing it until the states does and that will never happen.
