Default Internet/TV provider in Edmonton

Hey guys,

Just going to the braintrust here to see what all of you think about either Telus TV or Shaw digital.

I want to use either of them as a ISP as well. Any thoughts? Anyone have any good/bad experiences they want to share?

I mostly only watch TV for hockey, and will get center ice this year, so that is a concern. I also want extremely fast reliable internet and am willing to pay for quality.

I'm sure the services are similar in Calgary, anyone that can comment on their preferences would be great!

Edit: I used to use Bell for my sattelite tv, and that is pretty much all I have experience with. I see Telus has this Optik TV thing, is it worthwhile?

Fast internet? Get Shaw. The Telus Optik TV by itself is far better than Shaw but you have to be in the right area with a good enough connection. With Optik your internet will slow down to about 4mb/s with all 3 TV streams running.

From my recent experience in Edmonton, go with Shaw. They are the most reliable high speed connection there is. It sucks to pay through your ass once the initial rate expires, but you're paying for the best there is

I might go with Optik TV and internet. Although there is 5 people in my house. Does anyone know if you can have more than one reciever in the house? Kind of like Bell? I think there will end up being 3 computers and 4 televisions in the house.

That answer your question?

Telus can't provide good, reliable internet speeds with Optik TV.. It is a fantastic service, but only if you don't care about your internet.

OK, so I called Telus and they said it would be available to me. But now I am wondering if they have Center Ice. Because that would be a deal breaker for me.

They have the offical limits that Lchoy referenced, but they don't enforce those limits. Realistically you'll be able to download as much as you want so long as you aren't running an inappropriate business off your connection.

Well checking the web page suggests that they don't have it, at least not the Optik

Didn't you say you called Telus? Why didn't you ask them? The website gives the impression that Optik doesn't have CI but that Telus satellite does.

Canada has the worst options when it comes to TV service.

Telus TV service has the exact same "them pack" channel groupings as frickin BellTV........what happened to competition?

On top of that you cannot add just a single channel out of the "#1" theme packs. I wanted just the Discovery channel out of the "News and Learning 1" theme pack, but you cannot do that.

Yeah. Seems like they just tell people about the limits in an effort to keep people from using too much bandwidth.
