35, so I am thinking we were in different circles. I grew up in one of the houses backing on to Nickle. You know that little path with the yellow divider thing that cut down the alley off of Bonavista drive to the alley on the east side of Nickle? We lived in that big bungalow with the big pie lot with the huge wall of trees kinda right on the corner backing on to the softball diamond. My folks are still there to this day.

And that 7-11 was awesome. They always had great arcade games back in the day. I used to sneak out at 1 or 2 in the morning to play some Contra and get the just expired subs for free before they tossed them out. The pizza ones were awesome. Then they started closing it at 11 so that tradition ended.

does anybody remember when the Calgary Tower was called the Husky Tower?

I worked at Woolco for 6 years Part time. The shoe department was owned by Kinney Shoes. I then went into Woolco's management program and was in all 5 stores in Calgary during a 2.5 year time span.

I remember partying downtown in a place called Ahhs. It was the place to go and had 3 floors of dancing. 2 of which were see through floors with lights.

I hung out at the Pied Pickle in the NE and my main stay was Glenns Memories Bar on Memorial Drive and 36 Street.

I remember the Calgary Kickers soccer club where a few of my dad's friends were "semi-pro" players,....ya right, dad!

is the dry cleaners on 16th avenue still there and about 4street NW. cory hart shot one of his videos there.

Bryan Adams played one of his very first gigs at our high school. My friends band opened for him.

Trudeau came to visit our high school because our social studies teacher was a big supporter of the Liberal party. She made it happen!

I remember when there was only one Jersey city in a stand alone building on 16th Ave. , near Centre st. if I am not mistaken? Eating Jello at the K-mart cafe was always good. Anyone remember the name of the chocolate bar here in Canada that was the equivalent of a Curly Wurly in England?

I think Jersey City was closer to SAIT, just east of 10th Street, IIRC.

Wig Wags were the Curly Wurly type candy. We need those in Canada.

You're probably thinking of Rosedale Cleaners... the building was demolished to make way for the widening of 16th Avenue, but they are located immediately to the East in a new place.

A Cory Heart video, eh? Anyone know which one? I like seeing old video clips of stuff filmed in Calgary.

If you want to see a god-awful Calgary movie, I would recommend "Goose" with Chevy Chase circa 2006. There's even a kid in it that wears a Flames jacket. I just saw it on the weekend (had PVR'd it off of one of the movie channels) and it was terrible.

Ah, okay. Our house (well, my parents' house) is at the far left corner of the Nickle field, turn left down the alley and it's right there across the road you come to. I was already at Beaverbrook when we moved into there though, prior to that I lived on the other side of the lake, near where the Inn on Lake Bonavista was.

One bit of Bonavista nostalgia that is still going strong are the fairy tale cutouts that they bring out around the skating rink at the lake at Christmas time. Was home this Christmas and they still had the old Humpty Dumpty, Snow White, etc. cutouts that were there when I was 6.

That's what I thought too. Eamon's Camp. I wonder if that building is protected as a historical resource as there aren't many Art Deco gas stations around. Balzac is another one, but not as cool looking as Eamon's Camp.

Actually, with all of the 80's fluff aside, it wasn't a badly filmed video at all. It ran almost like a tourism video, except for the Rosedale Sweatshop.

I remember in the mid 80s XL had contests with what seemed, to a 10 year old, to be amazing prizes. I remember they sent out a flyer thing with all the prizes on it. I cant really remember the actual game or how to win, but i do remember their being a Ferrari as a prize one year. It seemed to be the talk to the town whenever the contest was on.

I saw ONE Remax balloon on the opening Friday of the Stampede. It was flying over Deerfoot Trail near Glenmore.

But you're right. I can remember days as a kid when you would see 15 - 20 balloons flying around.

I remember the pop machine at the Soccer Centre had a similar trick. You would drop your loonie in, and then if you mashed the button really hard and fast, you could get 5+ cans of pop. This was like 12 years ago though.

I do remember watching Halloween H20 there though, and that they played "Hand In My Pocket" by Alanis Morisette over and over and over while waiting for the movie to start.

Ahh the ECS yearbook. A couple things I remember from mine are:

When asked what your parents did while you were at school, one friend replied "My dad plays in bands and my mom plays computer games".

Another question asked what you would wish for if you had one wish. My friend replied "I would put lots of fluoride in the water so all the people in Calgary can have nice healthy teeth."

The two replies of mine that I remember were: My dream job was to play for the Flames, and I thought the most money in the world was "infinity dollars".

Edit: The Southcentre theatre is where I first saw Toy Story. And ya, the Wizard's Castle downstairs, and the pet store right beside it with the fish pond at the entrance. Good times.

I seem to recall, back in the 50's, Eamons was the place to eat. People would enjoy travelling out to it on the old highway to Banff, before the Trans Canada was built.

Also in the 50's, I believe the women weren't allowed to go into the bars in Calgary, so many drove out to the bar in Cochrane. I remember people saying the drive home, up the Cochrane hill, after the bar closed, was something else.

What is the history behind that place? Why is it named that?
