Of course, as always happens... people saw a report about a new software update to address the signal bar display, and got excited thinking that a software update was going to somehow magically repair a hardware defect.

Maybe because Apple said that the only problem was a software issue, and that there was nothing wrong with the hardware? Its not that unreasonable for non-tech people to hear that and expect an improvement.

The hardware is fine. It's the user's hand that is the issue. |

Exactly.

That or 'you are holding it wrong.'

I don't care if this whole thing is overblown. I just love seeing Apple have to deal with the negative press.

Maybe next time they'll muzzle their CEO.

I'm with Bell and I'm considering buying one of these when they come out. I'm currently in the middle of a 3 year term and am not interested in a hardware upgrade so I was considering buying this at a cash price when it comes out.
Anyone have a guess as to what that will cost roughly?

I also heard (got tired of sifting through the pissing matches in this thread so forgive me if it's been discussed) Canadians will be able to buy an unlocked iphone4 independently from their cell provider...

is this true or is there a catch?

I don't believe they have announced anything yet, but yes you should be able to buy an unlocked iPhone from Apple directly. In the US they are selling the 16GB for $599 and the 32GB for $699 (the US iPhones are locked to AT&T). The Canadian prices will probably have another $50 tacked onto them.

Going by what the 3GS full prices were, I'd say 600 for 8 gigs (3GS), 700 for 16 gigs and 800 for 32. I don't see the prices dropping..at least not by much.

EDIT: Forgot what the US prices were. It'd be nice if they were even fifty bucks cheaper than the previous iPhones.

I've also heard that the cell companies will sell them locked even if you buy it outright. I think Apple's the only way to get an unlocked one but I could be wrong.

That is a guarantee. Cell phone companies always sell their phones locked even if you buy outright. If Apple is going to sell them directly unlocked that is the way to go. It was the biggest reason I bought a Nexus One.

That makes sense, but CO thought he could get an unlocked one directly from Bell. I wanted to clarify.

I've been thinking of getting an unlocked one, but I'd get stuck with Rogers for another 3 years regardless - I'd still need to get a data plan seeing as I have nothing of the sort.

Really good article explaining the physics and technology of the antenna and what to do.

		| What’s to be done about it? The simple answer is to buy a $30 rubber “bumper case” for the iPhone 4 and put up with the clumsy appearance and difficulty of plugging the device into various attachments. Doing so, however, will put a wide enough gap between the dielectric hand and the antenna to minimise the detuning effect. Sticking a thin strip of insulating tape over the offending gaps (especially the one at the lower left-hand edge) is a waste of time. We are dealing here not with a simple DC circuit but with radio-frequency currents alternating at over a billion cycles a second, where a sliver of insulator acts merely as a large capacitor—in other words, a short circuit.

So, until Apple redesigns the iPhone 4’s external antennas—putting them inside the case where they used to be and where they belong—users will have to learn to hold the blessed thing in an unholy manner. And as Apple rarely admits to technical blunders, we will have to wait another year for it to quietly correct the antenna design with the release of the current model’s replacement. By then, of course, the iPhone will have plenty of competition that will have doubtless learned from Apple's mistake.

		| Apple Engineer Told Jobs iPhone Antenna Might Cut Calls
Apple Inc.’s senior antenna expert voiced concern to Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs in the early design phase of the iPhone 4 that the antenna design could lead to dropped calls, a person familiar with the matter said.

Last year, Ruben Caballero, a senior engineer and antenna expert, informed Apple’s management the device’s design may hurt reception, said the person, who is not authorized to speak on Apple’s behalf and asked not to be identified. A carrier partner also raised concerns about the antenna before the device’s June 24 release, according to another person familiar with the situation.

Such a double-edged sword with this guy. He rescued the company from bankruptcy and made a lot of people an awful lot of money along the way... but yeesh.
